Hi i have a sony vaio laptop and today when i tried to boot it up it stopped for a really long time on the boot up logo then the screen went black and the words "operating system not found" showed up in the top left hand corner.

Can anyone tell me what might be the problem?

It sounds like the master boot record got messed up. You can repair it with your Windows CD.

Well then probably unless a wire came undone, did you drop it before this happened or something that would cause it to come lose

or what he said XD

Insert CD and boot from it (change the bios to boot from CD)
Allow the CD to begin the Setup process
Press "R" to enter the Recovery Console
When you reach the command prompt type: fixmbr Press Enter
It will rewrite your MBR.
Restart and change the bios setting back to boot from your HDD.

Update: When i booted from the cd and hit r it told me no hard drive was connected, so i know the hard drive must have jiggled loose.

If the Hard Drive completely crashed or if the interface between the drive and the IDE/SATA channel went bad on either end that would cause it to not be seen (more likely on the drive's end)
