Possible to run a gaming server on part of a dedicated server?

I currently run a dedicated web server (in a data center) and was wondering if I could easily set up an online multiplayer gaming server on part of it while using the rest as a web server like it has currently. I have CentOS and cPanel/WHM on there at the moment and do not want to change that.

I could also expand and add another drive but really I'd like to do it using what I already have on the same drive if possible. Although it's not a huge deal for me to add another drive just a little extra cost for me.

Using the same host OS as your web server? Can't say that would be recommended in all honesty..if that server space you had allowed for multiple virtual servers then I'd say go for it.

What game(s) are you looking to host? Some games are very memory and cpu needy and most need good bandwidth/latency figures...which depending on your web site, both could hamper each other if on the same system.

Also, depending on how you have security setup or where you host your server, you may need to open some ports, button down others, etc.

I wouldn't do it, sounds like a bad deal waiting to happen, or an exploit waiting to be found imho. I'm sure it would run and work out, but if one or both services become really popular and used, that will degrade the overall performance of everything. What's the weak spot in the resources you have available?

What really needs to happen here is you need to provide more information...end of story. Not enough info, specs, game title, current traffic, proposed traffic, limits, etc.

Why be rude? You trolling instead of actually seeking help?

At least I tried to answer your question with the less than vague details you provided. Makes me wonder if understand what you're asking and what information is really needed to answer your question. No longer my interest though.

If you don't like our answers, please by all means, go ask them elsewhere.

Good luck to you! :toast:

He was trying to be helpful. Your post has been reported and a mod that moderates this section will deal with your rudeness. I would also suggest that this thread be closed if you are not open to giving more information so that others may actually help you.

No. What needs to happen here is that you need to accept the help you are asking for, communicate like a person and not insult other people on this forum. You have deemed your own thread completely useless and have wasted our time. I can only hope that the decent people here remember this and have second thoughts about helping you in the future. Or better yet, you learn how to address others with decency and respect.
