would the newer 9 series be faster?

Running XP on my machine and the new 9.2 drivers are working fairly well with them.

Still have some issues with Fallout 3 but able to run CrossFireX. I get some stutter static crud every now and then on FO3.

HD4000 series , best value in graphics by a long shot..

Ati has really done away with the Nvidia way of overpriced graphics cards, forcing them to slash prices in half and helping out graphics enthusiasts wallets. Way to go ATI!!

I still can't believe how powerful the HD 4000 series is. I recently picked up 2 HD 4830 cards on newegg for $65 a piece open box, which is ridiculous considering how powerful they are.

I was looking back at another thread about 8 months ago, where a guy had a massively overclocked e6600 and an 8800gts 512 running at 820 core, 1200 memory -- my lowly 4830 card at a mere 700 core, 920 memory on a 3.5ghz E5200 beats his system. I scored 6700+ gpu score on 3dmark vantage, with more overclocking headroom to go. It will be interesting to see what these can do in crossfire - I have high hopes.

It's amazing how fast things have changed in the bang for buck realm.

Good going, thats the thing with ATi, their prices are really good for what you get, no doubt. My 2nd 4870 I bought for $164 shipped, and the card is great. I remember paying $450 for my 2900xt, then again, things have changed a lot!

Yes they have. I just finished doing initial benchmarking after setting up a second 4830 in crossfire - I'm floored by the raw power of these cards for $130 out of pocket. I'm beating a GTX 280 OC edition card and easily matching a 9800gx2 , which were $500+ cards 9 months ago or so - here's a review I had to dig up that matched up to my E5200 at 3.6ghz , http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Zotac/GeForce_GTX_280_Amp_Edition/20.html

I also did a quick test of the F.E.A.R built in benchmark, matched the GTX 280 amp at 155fps at 1600x1200 4xaa 16x AF. Crossfire scaling is excellent it seems. Now off to do more testing at high resolutions and max antialiasing since some tests, such as 3dmark 06, don't scale well at lower settings.

........................

Here's my screenshot below - just look at some of these numbers on 3dmark 06- 1200 feet per second on the pixel shader test , crazy!

I've been messing with graphics hardware for a decade, ever since the geforce 256 - and this is by far the most impressive bang for buck I've ever experienced. Truly amazing.

HD 4830 beats GTX 280...

In the continuation of beating down a GTX 280 - results of 3dmark 06 at 1680x1050 at 4xaa and 16x Aniso. Still beats the GTX 280 without AA or Aniso.

I can't seem to bog down the dual HD 4830s. I guess we'll see what Crysis can do, since that may be the only thing that can make these sweat.

thanks for the feedback. I guess ati nailed it with those cards :D. I might buy a few later on when they are cheaper and see what they can do.

Just a note, I don't think anyone is going to beat erockers score on Vantage of 117k, lol! Anyways here's my runs on stock clocks on the 4870x2 and 24/7 clocks on the PII 720 BE.

And here's a shot from my old 5000+ clocked to beat hell, such a huge improvement with the new proc (4870x2 was stock clocks here too, but went back to 2d mode).

HD 4830 crossfire results.... bang for buck crown??

OK, here goes. I'm going to pile everything together in this post so my scores are valid. Seems I'll be the only dual HD 4830 run on this thread. I'm quite impressed with the results -based on previous posts, I'm easily beating out an overclocked hd 4870 even with a superior processor. What I've noticed with Vantage, is that I'm being bottlenecked pretty significantly by my poor 'ol E5200 at 3.6ghz. My scores would skyrocket an a quad at 4ghz+. At $130 for both video cards, I'm very happy with the performance. I'm still highly annoyed by my issues with Windows 7 64 bit- I just couldn't get Catalyst 9.4 to work at all without crashing - switched to Windows Vista 64 bit and it went without a hitch.

You can do better ;) the GPU isn't a bottleneck for the 4830s, its the bandwidth. Crank memory clocks up as far as you can :toast:

Although, in my experiences, memory speed hasn't generally increased overall speeds, I think you are right to some extent in this case - CPU is a bigger factor I think.
Unfortunately one of my 4830 cards can't even hit its rated 1ns memory speed, and I'm stuck at 920mhz for both -- one of them can do about 1050mhz, but not the other. Oh well, I can't complain for $65 a pop.
