I've started building a homelab this month to study for my CCNA/Microsoft/Linux/Virtualization certifications! I know there's members here who run homelabs by some of the replies I see in this subforum.

From top
R710 [not mine, configuring a fat server/thin client network for a store]
R710 [Mine. 2x x5690's 124GB ram 2 1GB HDDs Raid 1, 4x3TB WD Reds Raid 5] runs ESXi, with just Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter (Dreamspark).
Cisco 2511-rj access server
Cisco 3540something XL [bought when I didn't know what to buy.]
2x Cisco C3750G [with IP Services] 1U
1x same as above 1.3U
3x Cisco 2821 hsec-k9

I have a rosewill 4u case that's going to hold my new computer, you can see where I'm going to add it, but the rails/case is too wide by a quarter inch or so.

Plans are a cisco 5510 asa bun-k9 and a 4kW UPS and a PDU. After that, a R810 with 4x x7560's.

I have a 101/30 connection at my house with 5 static IPs. True speeds are around 110/45. I'm thinking about getting another connection coming in for redundancy/load balancing.

Cool. Mine are as follows but more of a throughput testing and review lab.

Note: this is not the most recent. Can't post latest due to beta hardware in use!!!

Also got more downstairs attatched to a d-link PoE switch but more beta hardware so I can't post pics.

No pictures at the moment, my homelab is very homey indeed.

My gateway/firewall is an Ubiquity ERL-3.
Two 8-port TP-Link unmanaged switches. One runs upstairs, supplies network to the main PC upstairs, to the Asus AC66R (as an AP until I replace with an Ubiquity AC-Lite) and MagicJack Go.

From there I have my home server, which is a glorified gaming PC sans graphics card, a 4790k + 24GB DDR3 + 3 gigabit NICs (2 ports in a team for VM use only). It is my core host for my Hyper-V VM's, which I have about 7 running at the moment, ranging from file servers, ADDS, DNS, DHCP, print servers, Minecraft server, Mumble server, Plex Server, and MCSA labs. Mix of Linux and Microsoft systems.

I also have an old Dell Perc 6i running a 4x2TB RAID 5 for my data array, going to go with 4x4TB soon as well. Been piecing it all together a few bucks at a time. I then have a large hard drive dedicated using Windows Server Backup (meh) to backup my VHD's and Hyper-V config files.

It is all behind a 1500VA CyberPowerPC UPS as well. Average output is 126W.

Hoping to add a real server like an R710 at some point, I scored some really truly good (to this day) deals on the hardware to build this server, and if I do ever replace it, I'm a graphics card away from another beastly gaming PC or what I'll likely do is use it as a failover or lab environment setup on a separate VLAN.

Hopefully I'll improve my setup and optimize what I have going on with some real dedicated goodies at some point, but have family priorities and holidays coming up, so not this year! :)

Check out orangecomputers.com tekboost.com and baddogservers.com. They all have excellent pricing for entry and mid level servers. If you'd like, I can give you my contacts email for orangecomputers and he can give you a better quote than what's on the site.

My home-lab is packed away in storage cabinets these days for the most part as I'm currently working on AWS certs. It consists of a few different items, each have a variety of different WIC's and configurations:

2 Cisco 2960's
2 Cisco 3560's POE
2 Cisco 2600's (One with Voice Services and FXS/FXO ports, the other is sec-k9)
2 Cisco 1801's (sec-k9)
1 Cisco 1841 (sec-k9)
1 Cisco Aironet 1140
1 Cisco Meraki MR18 (freebie from meraki, currently at my sisters)
1 Cisco MCS 7828
2 Cisco 7960's
1 Xirrus XR-630 (freebie from work, mainly for testing, will be returned soon)
2 Juniper SRX100
2 Juniper EX2200-24P
1 HP Procurve 2610
1 Ubiquiti Edge Router Lite (at my sisters place at present)
1 Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway (main production)
1 Ubiquiti UAP LR (main production)
2 TP-Link 5 port GigE switches (main production, much quieter and convenient for hooking up my entertainment devices i.e. small)

For most things server based I leverage AWS as the TCO is much cheaper (even used hardware is expensive here in Aus)

I'm currently working primarily on my AWS Architecture and DevOps certs, after that it's CCNP (Switching and routing), then it will be finishing off my MCSE and then probably JNCIS-Ent.

Amazon! genuinehardware and andovercg and Next Generation LLC are the vendors where I got my stuff. Everything has a 1 year warranty. And for servers go OrangeComputers.com or BadDogServers.com or TekBoost.com :)

They are all really old. The 3560's, you can pick them up for about $100 each on ebay. I only use them for labs, so gigE isn't a big deal for me. 2960's were freebies that I pulled out of a medical imaging place (guy didn't want them).

The rest is ebay mostly.

The junipers were expensive though (~$300 AUD each).

The Xirrus technically isn't mine. The aironet I pulled out of a site and the customer didn't want it. Same with the 1841.

The HP's are cheap as on ebay.

By all means, but it would probably be 100mbit stuff, people don't like buying things they don't need, so don't expect any gigabit switches or routers laying around, unless they're broken.

meh some of those might be "broken" to them but all they need sometimes is a reset or something else incredibly simple he he.

Hahaha.

It was a big medical imaging place, they had a couple of MRI machines and some other VERY expensive medical kit. Their Barco monitors alone were in excess of $10k! I think the rent on the MRI machines alone was about $200k/month each (apparently you can't actually buy an MRI from GE, only rent it). Compared to all that, writing off two switches worth ~$300 was nothing.
