So the problem happens on my new system with following specs:
i7 4790K
ASUS Z97 PRO
4 x 4Gb 1600Mhz Samsung Green 30nm
GTX 680
X-Fi Titanium HD
Intel SSD 520 180Gb
2 x 500Gb WDC Black
Windows 8.1 x64 Pro
USB Wi-fi + Blutooth Adapter from previous motherboard, the intel DX58SO2

I just finished installing Windows 8.1 and all the drivers, I used the driver CD for the motherboard and the latest driver for the rest of the components. The problem is, everything seemed to be normal when just restarting the system and on the other hand everytime powering the system back on from a complete shut down, I always get stuck on a black screen after the windows loading screen, no movable cursors, no nothing, all the leds on my keyboard and mice went out. The system can only start up windows if restarted, sometimes getting into the windows repair screen. Can anyone help address what's causing this?

ps: another anomaly being the system often powers itself back on when force-powered off using the power button during boot up phase and stops after like 3 tries.

Thank you!,
Marv

Something is causing it to hang. Most likely hardware. Disconnect every non essential part for trouble shooting. Only the CPU one stick of meme and one drive. See if it boots ok.

So no other devices, dvd drive, mouse, wifi adapter, no sound card, no video card.

If it boots okay then start add devices back one at a time to see whats causing it

I haven't done the strip down but I think I found out the culprit, the problem appears to occur only when the GTX680's driver is installed. Sometimes I noticed the debug LED on my motherboard stayed A0 and sometimes went 40. I don't know what those codes mean though. Any resolves on this? /:

The codes will be in the manual for the motherboard on there website. Load the 680's drivers. Boot to the BIOS and disable the intergraded graphics. Then boot.

I just got back from trying to disable anything related to the integrated graphic in the BIOS, No luck. I found no such option, I only found "Primary Display: CPU/PCIE/AUTO/PEG" I chose PCIE and then restarted the system. The system went fully powered off for a sec and then powered back on on its own just to show the black screen freeze again. I restarted it and checked the BIOS and found the Primary Display menu reverted back to Auto. I'm really at a loss now :(

@Caring1: Yeah bro, kind of, I saw multiple red LEDS blinking during the boot sequence, what does that mean?

Will things go better with the old Win 7 x64 btw?

Try at disconnect all your disks execpt the one that you want to install your OS on, then update it fully, install all drivers and see if theres a bios update for your MB. Then power off and put the rest of your disks into the system, then it should work.
Ive seen several times when installing windows with multible disks, it sometimes fucks up in reg.database, and that makes to problems you described in post 1.

So you are suggesting to do a clean OS install again? what about getting back to Win 7 x64?

I already got the motherboard updated to the latest BIOS and drivers, no luck stil :(

yes a clean install. No win 8.1 is much better and you can make it look just like win7 using classicshell, then it looks and works just like win 7.

Negative on the clean install. Not yet at least The BIOS selection for the integrated graphics Disable is there your looking in the wrong spot.

Well maybe ASUS does not provide one. Anyway before you install the graphics driver go into the device manager and disable the integrated graphics if you can't find it

You also might be able to boot to in safe mode with the drivers installed and check the primary display in the Nvidia software

The problem might be that its selection the wrong output for graphics. When it loads Nvidia software your screen go black

Not just going black bro but also frozen, there's nothing you can do but to press the reset button. And it occurs only at first boot.

Could this require temporarily plugging the DVI cable into the onboard graphic output to make the integrated graphic option pop out and then disabling it?

BTW my proc and mainboard are still under manufacturers warranty so if you guys think it's most likely either one of them, please let me know and I'll file an RMA

Anyways, I'll look into it, thanks

How do you know its frozen if the screen is black?

Just get to the desktop and disable in driver in the device manager

Or check the manual and disable it in the BIOS

I know it's frozen because pressing ctrl+alt+del does nothing and all the LEDs on my keyboard and mice turn off.

I just checked device manager in Safe Mode and there was only GTX680 on the display adapter section, is that the one I should disable?

And also I could not run the Nvidia software in safe mode, this is so frustrating mate

Something similar happened to me today with my new GTX960, prior to that I was running a 7950 with no issues (rest of hardware unchanged, used DDU and installed 347.52).
A lot of people are claiming different issues with nVidia and losing signal on monitor since the last set of drivers. Try using DDU and rolling back to older drivers.

With something similar I mean

1) Installed GPU. Turned PC on, everything worked.
2) Installed 347.52, restarted, everything worked.
3) PC was on for ~10 hours with 0 issues. Tested different settings on games, Heaven, etc. Everything went excellent.
4) Turned PC off, went to sleep.
5) 8 hours later, turn PC on and get no signal from monitor. PC was on, it did normal booting beeps, but I couldn't see where it stoped/crashed/freezed because I was making breakfast while the PC was booting :p
6) Came to PC with no signal on monitor, all fans were running correctly. Pressed restart button and everything started working correctly.

I've tried taking the GTX 680 off the motherboard and used the intel graphics instead, the problem's gone and the system ran smooth and perfect even I haven't installed the intel graphics driver it showed windows aero no problem. So at this point, can we draw conclusions yet?

Try rolling back the drivers to older ones (heck I'd even try the ones that came on the CD of your GPU). This is pretty much the best way to point the issue to the newest drivers.

I would do that... but I honestly don't know what would happen on a 9xx on old drivers.

You disable the integrated graphics not the 680.

@Daemmon I'll check it out
@Jetster Well mate, how else to do it?

For a Z97 (I'll guess the UEFI Bios looks all the same, I'm using a Z97-C tho). Enter Bios, go to Advanced > System Agent Configuration . There is no way to "disable" it, but maybe selecting the Primary Display option from Auto (default) to PCIe can fix the issue.

Been looking around the net for this issue and apparently it looks more like an Asus Z97 + certain GPUs/drivers issues, rather than a nVidia issue. Someone was having the same problem with a 280x

Try disabling sleep states from safe mode.
As you said the screen goes black and mouse and keyboard lights go out, the error code 40 also indicates a sleep issue.

Im currently in the process of doing @Ebo suggestion, clean OS install with only primary HDD.
I've tried to set the sleep mode to Never in the power management and even disabled the "Fast startup" feature too, nothing helped at all still /:
This such a curse,.. anyways if you guys are pretty sure that the culprit is most likely either my motherboard or processor just let me know straight because it will save me the big trouble and I'll RMA the sh*t out of it immediately.

Edit: Wah-lah! it seems to work fine now after following @Ebo 's suggestion mixed with @Daemmon 's . I was using the motherboard's drivers that came on the CD and older Nvidia driver 332.21 from Nvidia's website. I've been powering off and on the system several times already, so far so good. Let's see how it fares in couple days from now. Oh and again, if you friends still think the problem was most likely caused by some unknown defect on either of the new components, please just let me know so I can RMA immediately.

THank you kind souls!

IMHO, Asus Z97. Look for similar issues on the web and you will see tons of threads on different forums with this issue on different Z97 chips.

Would it pass RMA? Probably not as it's a compatibility issues or certain MOBO/OS/Driver combo. Maybe just reinstalling OS with older drivers do the trick, it won't for me.

I've read someone that fixed it with flashing the latest BIOS on another Asus Z97... something that I won't do under any circumstance since it's a 2 months old mobo :)

PS: Just did a cold off/on of my PC with monitor off as someone randomly stated on the internet. No issue. I seriously did 0 testing on my current setup, and it happened ONCE, but I did a lot of research when I saw your thread + something very similar happened to me.
