Problem on choosing D:

So my problem is, I am having a hard time choosing. I have the money just need help deciding.

I was reviewing the the benches on the GTX 580 on Guru 3D and saw that Crossfire 6870s smoke a single 580, but obviously 580 in SLI completely dominates CFX 6870s

Is it better to have 2 lower end cards to get a great performance or better to get a single high end card?

In terms of price and power consumption of 2x 6870s, it's cheaper than a single 580.

But then again, you're more likely to run into problems when going w/ SLI/CFX.

Not sure which set up has more pros or cons.

So I am curious on what everyone has to say, 2x 6870 or single 580?

I'd personally always go with a single more powerful card. I ran SLi and crossfire for a long time, and actually still do run SLi in a secondary rig, but one of the things I hate is when a new game comes out you have to wait for the optimizations before you get the benefit of SLi/Crossfire(more so with crossfire since it won't work at all without a Crossfire profile). So when a new game comes out, which is usually the games that really require the horsepower, you stuck with the performance of a single card. You don't have that issue with a single more powerful card.

That is true. I haven't even thought of that. But 500 bones for a single card then 1k in total for SLI is a bit much. But the powahhhhhhhh of SLI 580s would make any man drool.

Single all the way for me it just can save so much BS. Then there is the times when games come out don't support SLI\CF very well and not at all.

Your 1090T really isn't powerful enough to drive two GTX 580's, so why not get something like the 6950? You can always crossfire in the future with another 6950, 6970, or 6990 even!

Personally, the GTX580 is a waste of money, go for a GTX570, you're loosing maybe 10% in performance and saving $200.

I agree with this. But I would definitely go with the 6950 reference so you can unlock it to a 6970.

That's the best bang for buck card on the planet, in my opinion.

You can still unlock the '50 to a '70? Thought the new models fixed that.

As far as I know, you still can for sure if it's a reference card.

I have also heard rumors that someone made a program that will flash any 6950 to a 6970, but since I don't have one, I haven't looked too far in to it.

Single powerful card for less grief with driver issues. ATi are slowly getting better with their drivers though but they are still far from bug free and problematic when it comes to crossfire with some games.

when i say slowly.... their 11.5 crossfire profiles 'Just' (big emphasis on the word 'just') fixed the flashing issues when running Company Of Heroes, a game released in 2006 (2007 for the expansion packs) 4-5years late??? (who plays CoH anymore?!?)

Dual cards can be fun and a good upgrade path so long as they can keep up with the bug fixes.
