Problems connecting to 5G Network

I have the NETGEAR WNDA3100 adapter, and my router is a Netgear Genie.

I can connect to my 2GHZ network, but yet when I attempt to connect to the 5GHZ one it redirects me to my _EXT network or the 2GHZ one.

I need explanation, and help.

I cannot replace the adapter or router, so just help me fix this one.

Can you provide any better description of what you're doing, what's going on? What have you tried? Does this happen often? Why do you feel you need to connect on the 5Ghz band? For AC or N? Realize the 5GHz band has a much shorter range than 2.4GHz due to wavelength and lack of penetration through walls and other items. This might be part of your issue as well.

I take it what you need to do is set your 2.4GHz network to not automatically connect (usually a box to uncheck), and set the 5GHz network to automatically connect. Or even forget the credentials for the 2.4Ghz network.

What OS are you on? Have you tried forgetting your wireless network SSID's for that device and just reconnecting to the 5Ghz? Or setting it as a higher priority in the Wireless Network listings?

Another thing you could do, is totally change the name of each network, so that you have one that is 2.4 and one that is 5.0.

Also, don't get pushy for an answer, treat other show you'd like to be treated, if you want faster service, that will cost you $$$ with customer support for your product.

I've been here for nearly a decade because it is hands down the best forum on the Internet. That's because of the amazing community here. Welcome to TPU, and I hope you enjoy your time here and are able to get the answers you seek.

Yes, I have to connect to my 5GHZ network for a much more stable, and lower ping in game servers. I have it automatically connect to 5GHZ, but when it fails it connects to something else. Either the 2GHZ or EXT. My computer is on the same floor in the house as the router/motem, and probably like 30-40 feet away. I was able to connect yesterday, but my internet crashed and after that I couldn't connect. I'm clueless at this, and I'm not the only one on the network (it's my familys network, and I don't own it.) so I don't wanna screw to much with the Genie settings where it could mess with other connections.

How many walls are between you and the router? 5GHz as I said, is harder to keep a constant connection to because it's not able to penetrate obstacles like 2.4 and lower frequencies can.

Your Internet crashed as in the service provider side or did your router crash? You might consider resetting it if you haven't already. Is the router rented from your ISP? If so you may call them to remote in and assist you in configuration, to take the heat off of you.

Is connecting to 5Ghz really that critical for you at this point or is it just something you really want to do?

I'm not sure what EXT is supposed to be, guest network maybe?

You really shouldn't notice any difference between 2.4 and 5ghz for gaming, I never have and honestly being 30-40 feet away might present issues where 5GHz is less useful than 2.4Ghz for a consistent connection depending on how your floor is setup and designed, what else may be interfering, etc.

Gaming on wireless presents its own issues, but don't expect 5Ghz to solve them for you, at least in any great measure. I've gamed on b, g, n, and ac. Honestly can't say I noticed a bit of difference latency-wise from any of them, but throughput is a different story obviously, and that's what 5Ghz is really aimed at overall. It's shorter wavelength should reduce latency sure...but if you want truly reduced latency, buy a length of Cat5E (terminated if you don't know how or have the tools) and run it to your location.

Do you know how to get into your router and check settings?

You can see the 5Ghz network, and cannot login? Does that mean you don't have access credentials anymore?

What exactly do you mean by your "Internet crashing". Did your service go out, was it ISP? Power outage? Router failure? Modem issue? Did you call your ISP for assistance?

Update your system specs with OS so we can see what kind of computer you are operating, desktop model # or laptop model#? If it were feasible to run a Cat6 cable to your computer from the router I would suggest that. If it your computer you can run the setup wizard again on your computer to install internet again and not mess with genie settings. Maybe just use 5ghz only and not set up any other connections. I had problems once with a Dlink usb dongle that kept dropping my 5ghz connection. Turned out the dongle went bad on the 5ghz side. You really should not see any difference in stability or ping between 2.4 and 5 ghz because you are so close to router and the speeds for your dongle are the same 300/300mbs. Now you can have a lot of traffic on the 2.4 side that will slow things down. Definitely try running the set up wizard again on your computer

edit... kursah we hit reply at sametime lol

I'm not sure what EXT is supposed to be, guest network maybe?

It is what Netgear adds to the Network extender name.

example:
Router = "MyNetwork"
Extender= "MyNetwork_ext"

Which is closer? The router or extender?

@Kursah my motem/router crashed. I did not reset it, as it came up less then 3 minutes after going out. I do know how to get into the motem, but is it routerlogin.net or is it the application on my PC?

Btw, I use a like 4 year old HP Pavillion P6000 Series with some upgrades, but nothing that would effect my internet.

So let me state, my EXTender is like 1/3rd of my 5GHZ download and upload, and is also like 50 more ping on average. The 2GHZ and EXTender also give random ping spikes between 300-800 ping for up to 20 seconds.

I have to use 5GHZ.
