My friend has an old computer with and intel 850 chipset. this only supports the 400mhz FSB, if he buys a processor that used the 533 Mhz bus will it downclock to 400Mhz and still work?

If he can't use the 533 which would be better?

Celeron

P4

It already has a 1.8Ghz p4 would either of these result in a worthwile performance gain?

Get the celeron. Not worth the money for anything more, the lack of cache shouldnt hurt it that much.

If the current CPU is a willamette upgrading to northwood will matter quite a lot. Also a 533 could easily run at 400Mhz though the multiplier is fixed so it will run at only 3/4 the original clockspeed (2.4/533 would run at 1.8/400) The board might be able to overclock it a bit to somewhere between 400-533 though.
The celeron is worthless, the ones that run on your board at least, the celeron D is pretty good actually, though won't run on your board most likely.

If the board can provide 133MHz FSB you`ll have no problem.
