I've done all the troubleshooting I can:

    Restore system file
    Rebuilt system database
    Formatted hard drive

all in safe mode, yet browsing the XMB hangs for about 3-4 seconds per icon and it takes anywhere between 1 and 5 minutes to load up NBA 2K13
It took an hour to save my backup saves (40mb, 22 files) to a USB stick
(took 1 to copy them FROM however)

Take it out of the PS3 and plug it in the PC and format it and check it within windows. Make sure it don't boot as your primary drive.

Formatting it in windows if you pick the none quick option will check for bad sectors.

You could always use a 3rd party app like HDTune

How do I remove the HD, does it just slide out? Also I'm pretty sure I've still got the warranty for about 3 more weeks so if that doesn't work I'll just send it off

Edit: found how to do it on YouTube. I'll need to get a second SATA cable today first tho

put it in the PC and use HDtune or crystal disk info to read the SMART status. sounds like the drive is fubar.

    this...

if your warranty is over, try opening it, there's a tutorial somewhere on the internet and you can check whether there's dust clogging the heatsink and fans....

I don't believe removing the HDD from a PS3 voids the warranty. It's not as if you got to remove the security screws.. Well at least on the slim version at least..

I believe i read it in the manual how to remove it just a screw and a plastic cover then gently pull it out as it's like a hot swap drive..

Gonna try and RMA it out of laziness, and I've got 18 days of warranty left!!! If it acts up again I'll try all the suggestions in this thread
