ok, so long story short, had a tower running 2 HDD's, one was an 80g ide, the other was a 2T sata. the 80g was running the os (xp pro), the 2t had a game installed on it and was running at the time of the PSU death. tried to swap the 2t to a different shell and the new OS couldn't read it. is the 2t lost?
had a friend tell me i had to boot the original setup so the os finishes its read cycle on the 2t and releases it... umm, yeah, any advice is appriciated, if you need any more info let me know. thank you in advance.

Windows 7 should read it if you just plug it into an extra data or ide port. Or u
You could get a USB enclosure for it

Sometimes you have to let it try for awhile before it gets past the security

If you are very unlucky, your PSU fried the print on your HDD when it died, then you are i troubble.

I would try to put it in another machine, and see if its recognized in bios and see if its turns up in windows

I'd just order a cable to USB and connect the drive to a working computer. If the drive is ok, it should take a minite or so to "enter" into it. Is it only the game you are trying to save from the 2TB drive? :)

thank you for the prompt responses, sorry for the delay on my end. the drive in question is a sata. it was in the computer for a while. the new tower recognizes it but doesn't give it a drive letter. the disk management tool freezes when you try to go into it while the hard drive is connected. (new tower is running vista at the moment.)
and i wish it was only the game i was trying to save. im trying to get to all the data i should have had backed up in another location, lol. and i do not currently have a usb adapter/enclosure.

the drive acts completely normal, no weird grinding clicking or high pitched noise. will take a second to look over the freezer thing

Why haven't you tried a new PSU in the original XP machine?

EDIT: How many partitions are there, on a 2TB HD in XPpro?

Possibly SATA mode mode of the 2TB drive is different from the new host system? IDE vs. AHCI vs. RAID. I'm not sure, but I think AHCI mode will support an IDE formatted drive, but not vise versa. Don't know about compatibility with host being in SATA=RAID mode.

Unless the 2TB drive was corrupted somehow, you may be forced to try the original box as mentioned, or get a USB adapter.

sorry for the delays, figured i'd stop procrastinating and try what i could. i had to pull the PSU from the new tower to plug it into the old tower (only 24pin ATX 2 PSU with the P4 connector and an IDE and SATA power output) got into the old XP Pro, was able to access both drives no problem. i closed anything that could have been active or linked from the 2T, backed up what i needed from the OS drive, then broke the whole thing down and put everything back in the new tower. just turned it on, bios saw the drive, vista saw the drive, but it
told me i need to format the drive before i can use it. that is something im really trying to avoid.
i also added a 250g SATA drive, an IDE dvd burner, and reconnected the front panel (usb/firewire/front audio/card reader)
is there any chance that i added to many things at once? should i disconnect them all and reboot then install them 1 at a time while rebooting between?

How is the drive formatted? XP allowed for FAT32 or NTFS. How many partitions are on the 2TB drive? (asked previously)

Is the entire drive formatted?
