I've had my Corsair 650TX (V1) since 2009 and it still works perfectly. How long exactly do these things last before causing an atomic explosion?

It's Seasonic made and uses Japanese condensators, so I think that you don't need to worry about it in few years.

They typically leave a 5 years warranty (I think some PSU's have a 7 year warranty), and I think that is 24/7 usage. Also that has a MTBF of 100 000 hours, which is 11 years of 24/7 usage. That might lower a bit if you constantly pull say 680W from it.

While we're on the subject: Are those warranty years based on 24/7 usage at a certain load? Maybe even full load? And how do they reach those MTBF numbers, are those based on a certain load as well?

I believe the MTBF is derived directly from capacitor with worst specs (weakest link) : it's calculated form rating, size and the temperature range capacitor goes through under max. PSU load.
I think that's because caps are most wear-and-tear components in PSU.

I've been running my PCPower&Cooling 750 Quad since 2007. Still going strong. I think you will be fine. Same OEM Seasonic.
