Well, I'm in sort of a squeeze. I have been wanting a new processor for a bit. I have finally picked out a good mobo (a P5Q Pro, or P5Q-E if the price is lower), and now I am still stuck on the processor. My poor 5000+ X2 just can't oc much more (horrible batch), and it's really not doing so well with my multitasking habit. It sits at around 60-70% usage and when it spikes, it lags everything.

But, for me, it is really about price per performance. I would technically would not like to spend $60 extra for a Q6600, but if it will be much better in the long run, I will purchase it in a heartbeat. (Apparently Nehalem, or Core i7, will be way more expensive that than, so it will be out of my price range $284+)

So here's a few questions! :p

- Would a quad do me much better in the long run than a dual core? I do not game much, so the dual core's higher clock speed will not be too important.

- Will my PSU be able to handle it well (420w Thermaltake)? Also is the TDP of a Q6600 much higher than a E7200 (E7200 is 65w, but can't seem to find the Q6600's, is it 105w?)

- How well will my Zalman 9500 cope with a quad? I won't be ocing too much (I have to oc a bit, lol), as a quad will have plenty muscle. If I need a new cooler, I will probably pick up a XIGMATEK HDT-S1283. That will cool it quite well.

Think that's it. Thanks. :toast:

It`s up to you which to get. Q6600 sure is a gr8 chip. That psu might not handle it. A generic 400w certainly wouldn`t. TDP is 95w go stepping - more than that other steppings. The xigmatek or similar makes a big difference with a quad-core.

Ooh, sweet. If I decide to pick up a quad, may pick up one from him. :D

I may just stick with the E7200 or E8400. Any more opinions? Hmm.

If you like to multitask go for the quad.

Depends on what you are multi tasking. If video and audio, go for the quad, if just Word docs and firefox pages, then go with the E7200.

In a state of flux...
I multitask a lot (I'll often open CoD4 and play around on IE while a map is on I dont want to play/I'm rolling a spliff) and to be honest, this E6750 even at its stock 2.66GHz kept up and now I clocked it to 3.66GHz I click and things open :D

Q6600 is still a great chip, but to be honest I'd save myself the difference in price from the E7200 and get another decent Heatsink/Fan and then go buy the Antec Earthwatts 500watt PSU that is on offer on Newegg (I think it still is?)

Makes sense to me.
