I dont understand why yours is so hot compared to mine. What kind of case fans do you have? do you have enough good air circulation?

Did you use the pads between the mobo and arms?

Also if you do get a new cooler look for one that doesn't use push pins

The Thors Hammer is a nice heatsink indeed. The CoolIT, on the other hand, I have one coolin my i7 940 and it can't cope with the heat at full load. And, a part from the silent mode, it's quite noisy.

i wouldn't fret about those temps at all. hmmm as for cooling idk, i mean i use an Arctic Cooler Freezer Pro 7 for my q6600 at 3.2ghz. My cooler is way past its time imo so i'm getting an OCZ Vendetta 2.

Here's a review of thebest coolers for LGA 775.
CPU : q9450@ 3.2ghz.
Ambient temps: 16-17C/60-63F

Personally the OCZ Vendetta 2 seems to have the best performance per dollor. Mind you need to add 16 degrees to the temps you see on the graph as its showing how many degrees over the ambient temp(16C).

I would also throw the Scythe Mugen 2 in the mix, it's a really good CPU heatsink and it's dirty cheap in Newegg

I continuously see core contact at the top of Frosty Tech's and other lists. It's cheap too, and comes w/ thermal paste (which some reviewer put above mx-2) to boot.

I've seen the TRUE get it's butt get beat, and I've seen the S1283 come very close. Which costs a lot less $. Hell, I've seen a core contact freezer ($35) beat it out right... At $65 that makes TRUE stand for true effin' joke. So there's not even an excuse for a logical person to buy it anymore, if it weren't for out dated word of mouth it would be discontinued. Though that applies to many many inferior products. Half the shit on sale in the world relies on ill informed consumers...

linpack runs it hotter than anything else, but thats the point. If you're 2C away from TJmax with linpack, then you know even in the absolute worst case scenario (40C ambients, dusty fan, crysis 2

) that your PC will not overheat and crash.

true 120 and the xigmateks are also fighting within a degree or two for that performance.

Xiggies are my choice, they perform really well, come with good fans (quiet at low speeds, powerful at high speeds) and they're CHEAAAAAAP) half the price of a TRUE, after buying a fan too)

+1. @75F ambient I got mine running at 32C idle and 48C gaming load in Crysis and Left 4 Dead. The Xiggies do a great job especially when paired with that retention bracket, made all the difference. I cant wait till winter, open the window and hit 4.25 GHz under 50C gaming load. Xiggies are great and relatively cheap.

i get LINPACK load of 51C at 3.8GHz.

No one really cares about how low your idle temps are - thats pretty much controlled by your ambient.

@OP a few other things to consider is that all the coolers we've mentioned will do the job fine within a degree of each other pretty much. how is your case's air flow though? that and cable management impacts overall hardware temps as well(GPU, CPU, Northbridge, etc). good cable management is something my brother doesn't seem to comprehend haha.

just for you - heaters on, so its a little higher than usual.

OCCT's usage % always drops when i use the snipping tool, which is why i included task manager showing 100%
Kinda screwed up task managers shot here, its showing the OCCT exe file, not the linpack one (which is what uses the CPU on this test)
