And I've seen the contrary quite some times, it depends on the site making the review. One thing is for sure, super coolers aren't more than 3-4 ºC apart in performance so IMO you should buy the one that is less noisy and gives you better performance.

I have a Q9550 (C1) OC'd to 3.75GHz with 1.32V cooled by a Noctua NH-U12P with only one 120MM and my idle temps are just under 40°C and just under 60°C when playing games such as Clear Sky, Far Cry 2 and Warhead.

What thermal compound are you using, have you applied it correctly? I'm pleased with my Q9550, going to get a new case to accommodate my new PSU so hopefully my temps will decrease a bit more. Can't highly recommend the Noctua NH-U12P enough.

What stepping is your Q9550?

I thought my temps were high when i first fitted my Q9550 (mid 30c - low 40c). Then i reseated my Dark-Knight and now their around 30c. However, one core is always at 41c, until it gets hotter and it rises.... lol

I don't have push pins on mine so that I can deal with, still requires effort that at the moment, I just don't have. Now I need to find out if an Antec 300 will house my HX750W.

well granted at stock true sucks... but from lapping and pressure modding you can get 10+C off...

i got 15*C cooler on load by lapping + pressure mod.. grated we shouldn't have to do that.. but if you do it is nigh impossible to beat.

Heres my results with a true... Q6600 3.6 1.325v ambients currently 21*C (the max temperatures where from encoding + playing games or w/e ive done random stuff this morning!!)

also I watched task manager while encoding and it stresses processor around 75~80% mark and peaked at like 84% (so normal loads not silly burn my cpu which i wont do in a real program ever... application)...

I don't get your point, are you telling me those are mods that can only be done to a TRUE?

no but the point is, that it's badly made and with a few cheap mods its truly a beast, try doing it on another heatsink you wont gain anywhere near the increase in performance that the true gets (due to them actually being made with a good base and much better mounting most the time..)

the true has two mods which can be done, which improve its performance.

He's saying that modding the TRUE kicks its performance up, and therefore makes it an even better cooler.

I have lapped mine, and i did use the pressure mod previously - it CAN help temps another 3-4C. Lapping my previous CPU made more difference than lapping the TRUE. The 15C claim was exaggerated, unless his stock mounting plate was warped, or he'd lapped so much it didnt have sufficient contact pressure anymore.

I was meaning Q9550, but the lower VID chip generally runs hotter but will require less voltage, higher vid chip runs cooler but needs more voltage.

I havent seen this correlation. my xeon requires low vid, and runs cold. lower voltage = less heat... seems to make sense to me.

this is my q9650 @ 3825mhz under my Gigabyte cooler after about 6 1/2 minutes running linpack. Ambient is around 70'f

funny thing about my 9650, it pulls more voltage on idle than it does under load. Under load it was pulling 1.38 volts

barbaric: try the snipping tool that comes with vista, it can make it a lot easier to get smaller shots. (or at least do a quick edit in MSpaint, and cut out the desktop or something)
