Hi all,

So looking for a quad HD 13/14 inch gaming laptop (read high specification) and found quite a few examples.

My issue is that I found a great website but seemed to have lost it, I believe the company name began with an "M" and it may have been German in origin?

I've looked at the obvious ones such as Razer, MSI, HP, Dell/Alienware, etc.

Any other suggestions are more than welcome, I think the going rate for the high spec machines is the GTX870M, Intel i5/i7, etc. Other spec doesn't particularly matter as I'll configure to my personal spec.

Also I remember seeing a Killer Wireless-N card in a few of the machines, did these end up living up to their claims in terms of performance and speed (including CPU overhead)?

If you mean 4k res screen on laptop, be prepared to play with all options on low. I've seen some MSI gaming laptops with 2k res screens.

Some people have complained about network bugs and issues with Killer cards, but as almost nobody buys them, I'm not sure if they fixed issues. You just need a solid WLAN card, maybe something faster than 300Mbps (so that it has more recent techs etc)

quad HD 13/14 inch

Doesn't make any sense at all

I've got a Killer network card, nothing special, just has customisable bandwidth management.

there's a reason why monitor manufacturers do not producing less than 27 inch 2k screens

edit: (text copied from article below)
Gamers will also run into problems. Most modern games will launch at 4K, but smooth play is another matter. Any increase in pixel count results in a not-quite-linear, but a still substantial increase in GPU load. Want to play Metro 2033 at 4K and max detail? No problem! You’ll just need four Nvidia GTX Titans. Good luck coming up with that kind of cash, unless you’re Bruce Wayne’s cousin or something.

QHD is only 2560x1440. There are a few custom building manufacturers, but I don't know if they do QHD at that size. Any particular reason you want that res on such a small screen?

I find the whole FHD, HD, QHD nonesense annoying. It's just convulted and doesn't give you any accurate idea what they represent if you don't already know. They should just stick to 720p, 1080p, 1440p, etc.

I think that res on such a small screen is pretty pointless as well if you're going to try and game on it. If you just plan on hooking it up to an external monitor spending the money on that kind of panel would be a waste.

Thanks for the input guys, appreciated!

Basically I want the laptop to be able to be used for work as well, in terms of 3D (gaming) I'd most likely play the odd game of EVE Online, nothing overly graphically taxing!

For work I need to be able to see at least full HD (1920x1080p), sorry for the lack of resolution quoted. I'm looking for at least 2560x1440.

Any further input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

2560x1440 on a 14 incher will be absolutely terrible. And if you want to scale it (which you probably don't), make sure your programs scale well. A lot of them don't.
