How did you replace the GPU?

Oh OK, I got it now. My numbers are 07/12 (a really early unit). I know I have an older laptop with the potential GPU problem. It's working fine right now and I won't overclock it since it is an older GPU. I was hoping to replace the GPU with a newer one that won't "melt" on me. Thanks nVidia for screwing so many people with their faulty GPU solder job. ( Can you tell I'm bitter? ;-) ) Nothing like finding out after you bought a laptop that it is doomed to die an early death. I will never buy another nVidia GPU again because of that. I have a dead Gateway FX P-6831 with an 8800M GTS in it that just displays vertical lines, which is no doubt also a casualty of the same problem that plagues the NMV 140M (double-thanks nVidia! :banghead: ) I'm going to take a heat gun to the 8800M GTS and see if I can revive it. And I'm so bummed because I REALLY love everything about the T61. I may keep it and hope for the best or just buy another used laptop with a newer GPU and sell this one off. Anyway, thanks for the great research and good luck with your OC'ed lappy! Cheers! - Kris

OK!
Seems like i hit the limit of the memory clock!
I did discover some artifacts in furmark @ 1100MHz....and In world of Tanks there was 1 tiny spot on the map that kept blinking @ 1000Mhz!
Barely lowering the MEMORY clock to @990MHz fixed that.
But I also managed to get the Shader Clock all the way to a whopping 1600MHz!!!
And Core Clock also increased by %1.5 from 700MHz (400MHz Stock btw) to 710MHz.
No freezes or BSOD or any other graphic problems....WIE in Win7 alos increaased by .1 in gaming performance and 3D mark 03 Pro scores increased by a little over 1k. (default settings)

i will keep playing around with it!

You can go a little further into it and start looking at reflashing the GPU with different timings on the memory...

This is actually my favorite kind of topic...

First let me say...good job on the OC hoax32.

The first question...is the cpu upgradable, probably...and it should be cheap. I recently put a T8300 in a Compaq Presario C700 for $25, and a Phenom N660 in a CQ56 for $27.

I am more of an HP guy so I don't profess to be an expert on Thinkpads...but I've always admired the quality of the T series. The CPU should be upgradable...it woke the CQ56 up something fierce. Feels faster than my new laptop.

Second...wouldn't hurt perhaps to rummage around and pick up one of these for cheap. I've seen them dirt cheap...

Make a nice little project and you could slap it on the dock and game to your hearts desire.

Or...do you have an expresscard slot? Click

The mod is simple...

Best,

LC

I had a Dell with the NVS 140, but wasnt able to do much. I was able to play starcraft 2 on medium settings at 1280x800 with 25+ FPS.

You are really out of luck if you have intel hardware, that is a definite showstopper.

You should be able to game with great graphics if you throw 60FPS out of the equasion and v-sync everything to 30FPS.

You should buy the HDD bay/caddy (to replace the DVD drive) and put an SSD in that puppy! That would speed it up a LOT! Waiting for my HDD caddy to arrive in a day or so. Only costs $18 on Amazon too! Cheers!

i use my CDRW/DVD quiet alot lol
thats why i went from a 5400 to a 7200RPM with twice hte cache and defrag every day.
HDD speed aint the problem!
just trrying to get the most out of the GPU since im alredy coooling it like a nuclear reactor lol!
Now that the Shader is %100 OCed, core a little over %75 and memory around %60 temps have only increased 2*C average.

ADVANCED DOCKING STATION with DESKTOP GPU

OMG I just found out about the "Advanced Docking Station". Note the keyword ADVANCED (not the normal docking station). This works for multiple IBM/Lenovo laptops. What is amazing about this is you can put a DESKTOP GPU CARD in it and game hard-core with it! This video shows a guy playing Crysis 2 at amazing frame rates!

Advanced Dock on ThinkPad T61 with AMD Radeon HD 6...

Have a look! I'm contemplating buying one. They're selling on eBay for under $70 with free shipping.

Cheers!

That is a really nice notebook. My wife has one. Should last you many years if you take care of it. Nice over clocks but that Notebook is to nice to risk destroying the gpu on it. Take care of it.
