It looks like CRAP on Vista. And it lags too. Personally, I like worrying about that strogg with a hyperblaster before half-rendered textures, aliasing, crap graphics, and lag. You have to admit though, the Vista screenshot looks a little bit cooler from a game standpoint :p.

Wow, that looks ugly. Does it do this to other games as well?

Kinda looks like one of those Anime games, where they try to make the game both 2D and 3D.

Quake 4 (and probably Doom 3) is the only game it does this to, Windows Vista makes Halo look absolutely beautiful.

    Yeah, it does.

Are other OpenGL games like this too? Besides Doom 3?

Think so? Well, I can tell you one that's better on many levels (its codebase was used for VISTA in fact, not that of 2000/XP):

    "Windows Server 2003, RULES!"

P.S.=> "Z", I can see what you mean now, didn't really have to look too hard either to see the diff.'s in textures rendering & "efx" alone from the photos you posted above... apk

That screenshot is so much prettier then mine :). Must be combination of multi-threaded proccie, Nvidia 7900GTX, and SM3. I like my X850XT, but definitely want some of the SM3 pretties.

Man, that looks sorta like Quake 2. Vista blows and XP rules.

vista is worthless until newer games that require directx 10 come out u dont need it and the license for vista can be used twice no more than that so if u get a new mobo or reformat more than twice u have to purchase a new key. DOWN WITH MICRO$OFT. everyone should just start to use linux lol

Yeah, but driver support is minimal for my board, as well as not being able to play bf2...

    reply to first post:

Make sure you have Bump Mapping and Specular enabled in the Advanced Options, because it just looks like those are disabled.

Sure looks that way: I agree & that's basically what I meant about "textures" looking off above/earlier!

Could it be ONLY that, & nothing to do w/ MS' DirectX API function calls being used to emulate/replace OpenGL 2.x ones the game ordinarily makes?

I'll check it out later, but keep in mind I was just running the .EXE from the XP install (too lazy to install in Vista).

Hell, turn the AA off, at 1600x1200, it isn't necessary. I run it 1600x1200 8XAF smooth as buttah with my rig.

How about backing up why Vista sucks and not ATI? Isn't it just a driverissue?

Also, x1800 person, thre are people on these forums with 56K connections, use thumbnails.

Agreed - @ those resolutions ranges, jaggies on imagery borders fades completely: NO NEED TO TAX THE VIDCARD GPU patrolling them attempting to do work that is unnecessary!

Also worth noting, Halo primarily was coded using directx, not opengl :p

Wow, you must really not care about speech and animations all being completely out of whack by disabling that 60FPS cap limit :p

Heh, I have honestly NEVER noticed it... not once!

    :)

    * I am just interested in performance, MOSTLY, but not totally... "speed kills" (or, keeps you alive conversely, I have found in "First Person Shooter" type games)...

(I tend to go for, more-or-less, a balance on quality settings depending on res I play the game @ (usually only AF used, not AA because I play @ higher res' typically)).

Still, regardless of the tricks I pull on the game in its config files? I have yet to see animations &/or dialog from characters be "out of sync", even w/ the framerate cap pulled in Quake 4 SMP 1.2-1.3...

NEED TO ASK QUESTION (was the shots taken by x1800xtpeown done on VISTA?)

Again, were these shots taken on VISTA? Thanks for the info. on this note...

On 2000/XP/Server 2003? Probably around that much... on VISTA though (hence, why I asked if you took your photos on it)? I would probably give an advantage to ATI (better @ DirectX typically, & NVidia's better @ OpenGL typically, but in VISTA - OpenGL API calls get 'wrapper translated' to DirectX API calls & lose speed)

Anyhow - here is a GOOD idea from tests done @ AMDZone using BOTH ATI & NVIDIA CARDS on Quake 4 SMP Beta (w/ SMP ready code on, & SMP ready code off for comparing what multithreaded code design got them in the way of gains, "frames-per-second-wise"):

ATI gains on SMP built Quake 4 beta (would be faster in final build, no debug symbols or code present in .exe final)

NVIDIA gains on SMP built Quake 4 beta (would be faster in final build, no debug symbols or code present in .exe final)
