my motherboard asus M4A87TD EVO has a second pcie slot for crossfire. the second slot is 4x not 16x like the primary slot. i now have an xfx 6870, will there be a real increase adding another 6870 or 6850? i play 1900 x 1080. i assume that i have to use a 6800 series card to run cross fire. thanks!

Yes, you will get a performance increase. It will not be optimal, and sometimes you'll only get 1/2 of the performance of the second card, compared to say, a board with x8/x8.

In the down time between reviews, I will be working on(and have started) testing this exact thing, both with 9-series boards, and P67/Z68, in an effort ot identify the apps that are actually affected...it's not every one.

    yes, although its just 4x
it would improve your graphic quality but better if you could run it on 8x or higher

I dunno if it will turn out to be a full fledged article, or something I just toss up here in the forums.

I dunno why, but htese things really get me interested. Maybe it's because noone really knows what the full story is, or what...

I can't help but think that multi GPU cards will be affected more too, but I do not have 5970's or 6990's, so looking at that is out of the question right now.

What's also interesting here is that SLi isn't supported over a x16/x4 configuration, but again, I don't have recent nVidia cards to test with, and I think for it to turn into a real article, both sides need to be looked at.

Then there's looking at games with the same base engine, and if there are any differnces there...is it simply engine-related, or is it really a hardware issue?

I guess there's alot of questions to be answered there, and it's going to take a fair amount of work to find al lthe answers. I've got about 300 games I can test with, but doing every one is gonna take considerable time, nevermind all the OS and games installations that will need to take place multiple times...it's a huge task.

8 x would be great, but my boards second lane is only 4x. thats why i was wondering if it was worth the money.
