1: If I disable turbo boost does that mean my CPU will:

always run at 4.4ghz and never lower clocks when idle

only run 4.4ghz at load and run at lower clocks when idle

only run at 4 ghz at load and run at lower clocks when idle?

2: Which of these will improve my cpu temps the most:

Adding a secondThermalright TY-147A fan to run push pull

Upgrading my rear fan from the stock Phanteks case fan

Or adding one or two cheap 140mm fans up top

At the moment I'm hitting around 80 degrees on prime. While I don't expect a lot of overhead overclocking the 4790K I'd just feel more comfortable having better temps and more heat exhausted from the case. FWIW I'm using Arctic Silver MX4 already

First disabling turbo will let the CPU run at stock 4.0 but you will still see downclocking from EIST when not loaded.
A second fan on the cooler will likely make some improvement but usually not too much and the most air you can get into the case the better. Typically setting up air flow in a case is a bit of trial and error from my experience. These CPU's are just plain hot. Have you set the voltage manually or .....

I think so, to 1.18V. Can I go lower?

What do you mean I think so?
The only way to know if you can go lower is to test or just bump up the multi one and see if it'll run your test.

delid that CPU revove all the silicone they use to hold it on and replace the crap tim with antec nano diamond formula 7 or collaboratories liquid metal. if you go with the second option as a tim remember it is conductive and will eat aluminum.

I can attest to the quality of antecs nano diamond formula 7 with my 2600k at 4.9ghz with a CM 140xl nepton cooler and it never breaks 67c also I replaced the factory tim on my GTX 770 classifieds in SLI from evga and they did a fine job with the factory tim its just the Antec stuff transfers hot heat so much quicker. At idle temps were around the same but at load where it counts the stuff is hard to beat and it need no cure time and diamond is the best thermal interface bar none. Too bad Intel stopped soldering on the IHS after sandy bridge, but I think they did that on purpose so we could not have 5 ghz 3770k's 47/90k all over the place taking away from their E series CPU's. I mean at myu resolution of 3440-1440 on my 34" lg um95 my 4.5+ year old 2600k and cougar point p67 is still trucking in SLI with 8x PCIE 2.0 with no drawbacks or limitatations so any 3770k or 4770k with PCIE 3.0 will live a long time indeed. I am hoping for another 2-3 years with my 2600k with dx 12 reducing CPU overhead and the split frame rendering with the new SLI rendering technique to make my 2 4GB 770 CLASSY'S ACT LIKE ONE BIG 8GB CARD. Time will tell and i hope they convert some older games to DX12 also.

Well not everyone wants to take that chance and void their warranty at the same time. For most users a stock 4790k with turbo is plenty for gaming and day to day duties.

It was on auto but I think I reduced it slightly ages ago, I'll check it now.

Edit: yep manually set to 1.18V currently. My temps gaming are normally around 65,which is the main thing I'd like to reduce. Nothing is running at excessive temperature I just want a bit more airflow in the case. I don't think big overclock like 4.8 are possible with the cooler I've got anyway though

I'm running at 1.15v on full turbo and it runs just fine. As long as you have decent cooling then it'll run just fine.

People really need to stop being all elitist with delidding. I'm not going to screw around with a $340 item just to make it run cooler than I need it to be. If it's not broke, don't fix it.

Like I said earlier the more air the better and it'll take some time and testing to optimize it for your situation. You do have a bit of headroom on temps though 80c is well withing the safe limit and that was running P95 which is hot like a firecracker. I think you could try for 1 or 2 more multis, just keep an eye on things while you're testing

Yeah I don't really like to mess with warranty voiding stuff, especially after the mess I've been thru with ebuyer recently trying to get a legit RMA! Haha. For now I'll probably try undervolt to 1.5 and pick up a cheap fan or two like this and put it on top

80 on prime is pretty acceptable for a non-delid on air. I run mine at 100c p95 (4.55GHz@1.22v), rarely goes over 75 in games, maybe low 80s when streaming. 22nm is pretty good at dealing with temps.

Thanks Gorbaz. Just found out I can move my 200mm fan to the top as an exhaust. Is it worth doing so and buying two 140mm fans to go in front?

More air moved is more cooling potential.

High pressure fans for the front if I'm not mistaken? Any (inexpensive) recommendations?

What do you have ATM for fans?

For 140s I would suggest Phanteks PH-F140s, all of them seem to be quite quiet and good on noise. Otherwise you could go down the classic noctua route. If you can find a good deal on them, I would really suggest taking a look at the Scythe Gentle Typhoons, even though they are 120s. I've been using four in a HiFi amplifier and they are dead quiet if you keep the RPM down a little, while still providing decent airflow.

I doubt the improvements I'll get can justify spending £20+ on fans, I just wanted to grab a pair for £10-15. I could get another phanteks 200mm to go up top tho, which I'm also considering
