you guys are icrazy... it will work just fine, and better than air. How do i know? they came out with a Uber OC'd watercooled 295 that got WAY lower temps than air and had a crappy coolit 120 built on to it, they have done the same with a 4870x2.

any decent 120 will cool dual gfx cards better than air, especially stock air...

now is it better to get an aftermarket air cooler? yes. because it is cheaper, and they are quiet as well, and honestly, unless you volt mod, you really dont get much out of watercooling the gfx. and even if you do voltmod, the 30% performance that you might get out of it is not worth the cost.
Well it will cool quite well if you go slap a couple of Delta EFB1212SH fans on it.
Or go for this

But that really defeats the point of going "silent" :p

30% is worth the silence to many people. With something like a triple rad, he can use low speed, very silent fans, get better temps than ANY air, and still be more quiet than said air coolers.

very true... i meant that the 30% will be a max increase in FPS from overvolting and overclocking...

as far as silence... 120MM will need a medium fan ~60ish CFM, but a proc puts out WAY more heat than a videocard (just try cooling your i7 using a vga cooler :D ) and a 120mm should work just fine really. Ive seen it done. Technoholic tim cooled both his 4870's using a single rad here at tpu with good results.

a 120 mm rad is plenty. But not for "quiet". its enough for "not loud"... but def not for quiet. expect temps in the 55-60C range

The thing is dual GTX 285 still puts out significantly more heat over a GTX 295.

it does, but how much more?

that and a decent rad (like a magicool elegant, thick XSPC, or the new Koolance HX copper series, or even the bix-sr1 if you got the dough) in a custom loop might be able to dissipate more heat than that coolit with its itty bitty tubing.

I would have to say tho, you're right on the quiet part - a double or triple will offer much better cooling at lower sound levels, no contest.

and considering how quiet the reference on the 285's are, you wouldn't really be able to cool them quieter with just a single rad. go at least double.

A single 12omm rad was not enough for 2 4870's for me with any fans that were even remotely silent. It only did well with noisy as hell fans, that were no better sounding than air.

but how high was the temp... with stock it can hit 80+C easy... you're telling me that your single 120mm rad couldnt keep them under 80 C with quiet fans? or even 70C?

A hell lot more, just look at the difference between the GTX 295 and a GTX 285 "GX2".
Two GTX 285s are clocked much higher both core/shader/memory and have more memory chips due to 512-bit buses.
It is a 20~30C (the GTX 295 around 68C and the 285X2 at 90C) difference between the two sandwiches.

Over 70C with truly quiet fans.

There is no room in the case for a 120.2, but it is possible to perhaps fit two 120.1 in different locations. I would like to try just a single 120.1 rad first and see how it does. I can always go back and install the second 120.1 later if the noise level is still too high.

So if I were to try this what radiator/fan combo do you all think would have the best chance of pulling off decent cooling with minimal noise?

Criteria: One 120.1 rad and One 120mm fan.

Just compare the thickness of a 120.1 to the H50 rad, its like double

Yes, those fans plus a thick 120mm rad like a thermochill or XSPC.

Kit was cool, but I guess the new avatar is acceptable :toast:
