I thought I would check here first.
I need to get the wife a Radar Detector for he Birthday in July. I know Cobra and Escort are 2 of the best. Highway driving, lots of cities and small towns. Who has the best bang for under $300.00.

    So far I like this:http://www.radarbusters.com/radar-detectors/cobra-radar-detectors/cobraxrs9970gradardetector.cfm

    or this one:http://www.radarbusters.com/radar-d...tectors/escortsolos2cordlessradardetector.cfm

Some one here has to be up to speed with these things.

    Thanks

Just friendly advice, AFAIK radar detectors don't work any longer as alot of the police forces have switched to laser detection.

The LIDAR jammers are a lot more expensive. Either way I recommend getting the escort. They pay for themselves a thousand times over, I have this one and it works great: http://www.radarbusters.com/radar-detectors/escort-radar-detectors/escortpassport9500ix.cfm Escort all the way baby!

I also have this laser jammer, it works great: http://www.radarbusters.com/motorcy...dar-detectors/blinderm27xtremelaserjammer.cfm
Depending on how oppressive the state popo are in your area she may be better off with a laser jammer instead of a radar detector.

They are legal in Washington state, only a couple states do not allow them.

and most new ones also have laser detection built in along with GPS positioning

The use of a radar detector in a passenger vehicle is legal in all states with the exception of Virginia, Washington DC. and while on military bases.

The laser detection on most detectors is useless as the laser has to hit the detector, and the police are trained to not aim the laser at the windshield, they usually aim it at the front bumper or hood. However, laser is only used near major metropolitian areas, radar is still used way more.

My past 2 detectors have been Cobras and I've liked them. I would say if it is for the wife not to get something overly complicated. Personally, the XRS-9545 is probably a really good middle ground option between price, performance, and complexity.
