okay guys, in my hands sits a radeon HD 5770. It works fine... sort of. Sometimes when it boots into Windows, after the Windows Logo is displayed on startup my monitor flashes constantly with a message saying that the display settings aren't configured properly and that they should be set to 1680x1050. The message flashes so fast that I couldn't read what it was saying in the first place.
A quick solution is to unplug the DVI cable and plug it back in. Sometimes I would get verticle gray bars too.

Anyone else have this problem? I'm assuming it's a driver issue? Of sorts  should I send it back to Newegg? Should I get a refund? replacement? Just a bad card or what? I really like this card but... minor annoyances are a no no :slap:

try to take a SS and let it load upload it to us.

it could be the drivers. i don't have one YET but i plan to and drivers could be an issue.

some more info on your computer would be great like MOBO and PSU. help you resolve this problem

the problem you're having is related to your monitor.

The monitor is being ran at a resolution/refresh rate its not designed for, and is warning you of this.

Next time dont unplug it, and check what your settings are for resolution and refresh rate in windows - with the minimal specs you've given, i suggest 1680x1050 @ 60Hz

Monitor's recommend setting is 1680x1050 @ 60Hz, and the graphics card is running it as such.
I can take a vid clip of it but it seems to happen at random. It doesn't happen in safe mode. Doesn't happen when the computer first boots up.. :shadedshu

compy specs are what my compy was before the 5770. The 430W PSU should be enough. I think the 8800GT consumes more power than the 5770HD... PSU shouldnt be an issue as it worked fine running Napoleon total war for 4 hours straight :p

yes but is the card running it as such WHEN the problem occurs, not before or after?

This can be caused by a bad monitor cable, bad monitor, and rarely by a bad video card/driver (for example, card could be getting too little power or overheating and the driver resets - and when it resets, it loads the wrong refresh rate briefly)

In my personal experience with this kind of issue, its normally the monitor at fault (dying of old age), or a bad cable.

Well see, the thing is this monitor is only two years old. And it worked flawlessly with my 8800GT. Why now? :wtf:

Card should be running at all times. From the boot to logo when the Welcome screen pops up thats when it flashes. I haven't had the chance to see what the refresh rate is, because when it flashes the screen is black. Only the message in white flashes.

Now when I first ran the graphics card it did that a LOT.... because I used setFSB and messed up the timings. It got so bad that I reinstalled Windows 7 .... it doesn't do it as much now. So... not sure. perhaps bad drivers? Is what I'm thinking.

did you try uninstalling the drivers and booting into safe mode and cleaning all the left over files with a driver cleaner? you said you had an nvidia card before an ati, try cleaning your pc with both the ATI and Nvidia option in the driver cleaner. then reinstall.

make sure you have the proper version, go here http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html, then select the OS you have. download it. install.

EDIT: I noticed that you've already reinstalled windows 7, so no nvidia leftover worries now.

maybe its a bad driver. make sure you got the right one for your system and card. if its not, then its a faulty card, a dying monitor or bad ports/cables.

why didnt you buy a Sapphire Radeon HD5830 ??

its much better and can overclock like crazy.

from a benchmark i saw that the guy who used MSI burner could overclock the core up to 1010mhz and 2247 memory and there was atleast 20fps performance boost over the stock 5830 and was faster than a stock 5850!!! lol

and here is the proof.

http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/sapphire_hd5830/9.htm

the superclocked 5830 is like 30fps faster than 5770 and can match the high end cards.

so i dont know why most people still say 5830 is a bad card????!!!!

so according to that benchmak, overclocking the core can make up for the lack of rops.

is it flashing up at any time other than the windows welcome screen? cause if its not, just ignore it.

oh and 2 years is plenty of time for a monitor to go on the fritz, especially if it was made cheaply or treated badly.

That's what happens. That time it went to sleep and came back on.
It doesn't flash at any random time other than that which makes me believe that it's not a video card problem. and I hope that the LCD isn't dying :(

How is this post helping the OP?
Go back to your own thread for this.

I hardly call ~10% "much better", and the truth is there are many 5770s that overclocks even more "crazy".
Don't put yourself into thinking that 5770s don't OC, the fact is they also OC damn well.

Because sapphire blows and I know from experience. And I don't NEED a 5830 to drive a 1680x1050 display.
