aye, but enthusiasm for the card itself died around december time for a lot of people, we just want to see if nvidia are actually going to put up a fight this generation. Overall it looks like fermi does a little better than the hd5870 at normal gaming settings in MOST games (read: not all), but does do well at extreme settings (i.e. 2560x1600 8xAA) because of the 1.5GB of memory.

I agree, however I feel that potentially there is more to Fermi's performance than meets the eye. I say that only because we pretty much know that there have been yield and other associated issues, we also pretty much know that because of this the shader count was reduced, I think we will be looking at something like 480 shaders for the GTX480 (funnily enough), now the rumours do suggest "perhaps" a 5-10% performance increase over the HD5870, my guess is that actually the GTX 480 might not be their top single GPU card, but when yeilds and process improve they will in fact deliver the origional product with possibly up to 548 SP's to produce a 20+% performance improvement over the single GPU competition, as everything, it's all speculation again, and worryingly this time..... it's my speculation so take it all with a pinch of salt!

my guess is the refresh will be a die shrink with the full 512 shaders. they NEED a die shrink to get the wattage down, before they can do anything else with this design.

In that case theyre looking at more than 6 months providing the card gains performance and runs cooler.

Fud and Charlie are credible sources, just look at there past articles, they are well within being 90% of the time dead on. Facts change overtime, so nobody will give you exact facts but rather close enough to draw conclusion.

they'll prolly do what ATi did with the 2900... release a cheaper version of the 480, call it the E790 (jk) it will be much liek the 3800... and then after that, they will be able to just keep doubling up, tweaking, doubling up.

You forgot to mention a minumum price of $1000 bucks. 2nd half of this year according to "the Dirk" (Dirk Meyer) It would be interesting for ATi to come up with a bus somewhere in between 256 and 512 that would perhaps be more cost effective.

AMD could have already designed a much faster version of the HD5870 but as we all know they were forced to dump the design in favor of smaller more efficient cores, the question I wonder is what exactly was the monster they cooked up the first time around, and can they optimize it enough to be viable for selling and the answer is probably no, . . . . . if they could we would more than likely know about it.

The HD 4890 was sort of a re-spin of the 55nm. It also had a little more transistors, bt not by much.

With single-card eyefinity, I'd say it's an even more feature-rich card than Fermi, even more if Fermi's computing abilities are castrated in the consumer version.

I say clock the Cypress to +1GHz and 2GB GDDR5 and we'll have a new single-GPU king.

i would like a smaller design, with less power at load. also, a new design that allows ram to be additive in crossfire (shared framebuffer)

those clocks most people can reach it with an normal overclock, others can go higher
so i think you answer yourself, same bandwidth- same ROP's-55 nm and same texture units, so what's improve = more clocks only

I'm about to get two more 5870s and plug them into an X58 mobo to run Tri-fire with my other.

I've had an i7 920 in my primary rig for a while now. Need to pick up a mobo that will allow me to use 3 cards.

I wonder if the performance gains (if any at all) will be worth the price. last time I heard running in Tri-fire or high was a total waste of time & money not to mention the bad performance issues due to buggy drivers.

trifire is actually pretty efficient for the most part, its quad fire that really takes a dive. But yeah any multi gpu setup will have its issues.

Idle power was actually lower with the 4890. The "capacitor ring" they added around the GPU actually made a difference in power consumption.

Few HD4870s reached 850MHz, but pretty much every HD4890 reached 1GHz, or at least 975MHz.

4890 effort went into a set of decoupling capacitors that helped stabilize voltage to the core, reduce crosstalk and other noise plus a few other minor tweaks.

Still owning two HD4890's and enjoying them both in XFire at 1035mhz without any voltage adjustments I can safely say.... as a refresh it is one of the best refreshes ever, certainly better than the GTX260 refresh where it increased the SP's from 192 to 216, I had them too and I did get a performance improvement at stock but sadly the 216's just didnt overclock half as well.
