hohkay, soh. sure this has been asked like a jillion times, forgive me the cardinal sin of not searching this specific forum before posting.

ive got a brand new i5-4690k, asus z97-a and corsair h100i waiting to get voltron'd together, and im looking to squeeze in a modest ram upgrade in as well (in the mean time ive got 2x4gb g.skill ddr3 1600, cas9 @ 1.5v)

from what i can see, 1600/c9 is still a good entry point for gaming. 2133/c10 would then seem to be a decent step up (tho performance increase in games appears to be negligible), but most 2133 kits seem to be 1.6-1.65v, and depending on which threads you read, for haswell cpus you either risk damage at that voltage or are totally fine.

i did dig up the mobo's memory QVL sheet and (FWIW) does list 1.65v kits in several flavors
assuming i wont see any significant difference in normal day-to-day useage between c9, 10, 11, im eyeing http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231653 , which is a 1.6v set, but would love a [2nd..3rd..4th..Nth] opinion

1.65v is fine for Haswell. I'd try overclocking the RAM you have now before buying something new. It very well may be able to do 2133 or at least 1866 at CAS10, and don't be afraid to up the voltage on your current RAM to 1.65v. I have yet to come across a 1.5v kit that couldn't handle 1.65v.

you won't see any difference between any ram in that computer

yea he will.

he has a mem controller that can hit higher speeds and a cpu core which can use the bandwidth.

i would look for 2400mhz today dude, cas 10 or 11 :)

if you already got some ram you don't need for another build then you will most likely be fine. cas 9 at 1600mhz is fine for most until you hook up several monitors and start multitasking.. even then though you probably want a i7 when your talking about that kind of system.
it might feel a bit snappier you can up the voltage and get the cas latency down to like 7 on that 1600mhz kit.
yeah you would probably do better to get like a ssd if its a matter of one or the other.

Give your RAM as much juice as it needs.
modern Micron=up to 1.84
Hypers=up to 1.79/81
Samsung=up to 2v+- a little
older Micron=up to 2v+-
PSC=1.75?
All that stuff about overvolting RAM is a myth.
There have been 0 instances of problems from overvolting RAM since Sandy Bridge.
Nehalem..it's possible there were problems.
CAS 9 @ 1600 is terrible :banghead:

I set my RAM at 2.02v any time I want to run a benchmark ..on Haswell.
I run it daily @ 1.74v

Seriously, don't listen to Schmuckley, he has no idea what he is talking about and you'll just end up burning up your chip running at those voltages.

Do NOT go over 1.65v with haswell.

You'll see that recommendation all over the place and Intel has even said it themselves that going over 1.65v will damage the memory controller on the processor.

Also, you won't see any difference in real world use going over 1866MHz.

Naw..I have no idea..The entire overclocking community has been overvolting their RAM since the Sandy Bridge days with 0 instances of problems from it...but you know..I have no idea
:rolleyes:
There were a few instances with Nehalem,but nothing since.
Intel adopted that policy in the Nehalem days.

Yes, there have been plenty of problems.

There have been plenty of instances of chip degradation.

Even on these forums I see at least a topic a month about someone's overclock suddenly no longer being stable.

The memory controller starting to fail is one of the reasons.

It isn't an instant process, so it is hard to diagnose and often overlooked.

Just because it doesn't die instantly doesn't mean you aren't slowly killing your chips.

I'd give a chip running over 1.65v DRAM voltage 1 year to live, less if you push it to 2v all the time.

And even if it lasts longer, why risk new expensive hardware for no real world performance improvement?

To be fair shit does degrade if pushed and tim degrades too so id say it's safer to aire on the side of caution unless you are willing to regularly maintain your system via clean outs and re-Tim etc often ish and stuff ages thats life .

ram is ram and on intel single gpu systems anything >1600 is plenty
2133 from those sticks is most likely a pipedream anyway
