A buddy of mine recently gave me an old gateway that apparently was broken. Turns out the only things broken in it where the psu and harddrive. Everything else is fine(haven't tested the sound card but i assume that it works, it looks like it was never used).

I got a nice 350 watt antec psu, and can handle finding a decent harddrive on my own, just wondering what kind of video card to get.

    current specs:

An ass backwards piece of shit gateway motherboard(a dual sloter video card will not work do to this, rendering my old HD 3870 useless yet again)

    Pentium D 2.8 ghz

    1 GB of PC3200 ram

    Intel GMA 950

    Soundblaster audigy

    busted hitachi 250 hdd

    and that antec psu

It has a PCI express x16 port, and needs to be a single slotter, fairly low power muncher, and my budget is flexible, though i dont plan on spending more than $70-80 on it.

I would suggest a 9600GT/GSO. It will use little power if any(from the psu) and be overkill for that system.

New pricing will fit your budget fine. :)

I suggest a HD5670. They eat very little power and run very cool. The XFX 1GB one has a single-slot cooler and is currently 69.99$ after MIR off the egg:
    XFX HD-567X-ZNF3 Radeon HD 5670 1GB 128-bit DDR5 P...

This one will be faster than a 9600GT/9600GSO, eat less power and be much quieter than a single slot 9600 card.

Im actually thinking about rebuilding my old dell dimension desktop but i dont have the cash. i wanted to get a better psu, Amd athlon II x2 cpu, MSI micro atx motherboard, 4GB ddr3 ram, and a SATA HDD. I would just do it for fun haha

It's a shame that fun comes at a price.

Can you go used pricing? If so, you could get a GTS240 for $80 and that 9600GSO would be about $45 shipped.

heck if it goes out/dies it would be just as cheap to replace it with a similar item rather than messing around with the warranty dance.
