Looking for something fun like Wing Commander/Starlancer/Tachyon... but more recent. I got into X3 for a little bit, but don't really have the time/commitment for it.

This is what I was going to suggest. Not super modern, its a few years old, but fun as hell and decent graphics.

Freelancer was a ton of fun until you got the biggest, baddest ship you could get.
Then it was not much of a challenge at all.

I guess there are a lot of mods fo the game out there, but I did not try any. It's been quite some time since I've played Freelancer.

I don't think I ever tried freelancer. I might have to give it a try.

Having just watched the entire Battlestar series on Blu-Ray I am definitely going to have to give Beyond the Red Line a try. It's downloading now.

Did anyone ever play Darkstar One? Not great, but was definitely fun. Comparable to Tachyon.

Freelancer pwnz those games. Hard. Freelancer is still very (VERY!) good. The first time you play it is pure magic. It's kinda sad when you finish it all and you know in your heart there will never be any more of those magic moments, like when you enter the Omicron systems for the first time. Just.. Beautiful. :(

Nope... file not found. (your link works... the next one to DL the file doesn't)

Edit: Found it on a different site. Still... 3 of their four mirrors were broken links as well.

    +1

It's a pretty technical game, but it's worth the steep learning curve...the seamless MP/SP, seamless planet entry, etc are all great. I still play this from time to time. When I want less technicalities and more action I load up some good old Freespace 2 (plus the massive amount of extra user created content due to the game being made open source, there's GB's worth of goodies for it) I got for like $5 from gog.com.

Holy crap. Amazon wants $60 plus shipping for Freelancer. God bless E-bay!

Whoops, I forgot that it is not on Steam anymore. My bad.

You can get it from the developer here.

    @Frick ... I lol'd at both of your statements.

Freelancer was to be the second of a trilogy (first was Starlancer). The third never came out. I've beat it four or five times (at least). It is a great game.

If you get tired of it, look up "The Next Generation" mod for it. It adds new weapons, ships, and a whole new sub-universe.

In most ways, I say Freelancer > X series.

Space Force: Rogue Universe is similar to the X series but not as finished. You may want to look it up but I'd definitely try a demo first on that one.

+1 for Freelancer. going through the Story is always fun. i have tried the Mods but non of the story add-on ones.

Note: Freelancer can only support Res. up to 1280x1024. there are Files you can Edit to set the Res. Higher but it's not worth it as the Progress Bars for Shield, Etc. is out of place. so are the Menus.

I don't think you can compare the two like that. I rather play Freelancer, but X is simply another kind of game. Now what I want is a Freelancer with X3 graphics and ships. :D

Independence War 2: I have the CD ISO's if you want. Great game, long too. Also known as I-War 2. The first one is great as well just a few years old.

Yea, Ive played Darkstar One and beat it many times lol. It was a good game but Freelancer is much better imo. I just dont like Darkstar Ones's lvl system (artifacts) and that you are in just one ever changing ship.

Dont even try Starshatter. It was a HUGE disappointment. Bought it, played it once and stowed it away lol
