Recover Data from disk

Hello,

I have a disk that is unrecognizable by windows. the point is that it is an gpt disk. now it got connected to another pc and it didnt intialize. so they intialized it with MBR instead of GPT. the disk shows up with unallocated space. the intializing probably wiped the gpt partition. Do you guys have any experience with this? maybe restoring the table with the free program test disk?

If the partition table has been wiped, though luck. Although you could try SystemResueCD or anything similar to write a new GPT table on the disk although I doubt you can get your data back.

If the data is really important to you I'd suggest (IF AT ALL POSSIBLE) cloning the drive onto another using a bit for bit clone first and attempting the recovery on the clone - a clean clone will not compromise the original material, where as a failed , or improper recovery attempt very well could.

The problem is it is often not possible to know EXACTLY what method of recovery will work until after you have succeeded / or potentially ruined any further chances of recovery.

I know it is for some an expensive option - but if you data is important to you it is always better to clone first - and try a few different approaches on the clone.

I'm only saying this because I have met a number of people who lost their data attempting a recovery believing that since the drive was unreadable it could NOT be cloned - when in fact regardless of the state of the filesystem, and your operating systems ability to understand the data on the drive - the data its self is still usually very much readable at a hardware level even if you cannot recognize the data structure from inside an OS. It is thus often quite possible to make a "safe" clone of that data to attempt to reorganize for the OS without actually compromising your original drive.

Recover the GPT partition and convert it from GPT to MBR. You can do it in Windows, or from a bootable flash drive or CD.

You dont even say what you want to do? Or what systems your connecting it to. XP wont read a GPT. If you want to recover the data or the partition your goijn to have to use 7 or 8 to read it even with a recovery program. Also the max sice of a MBR partition is 2 Tb. Getdataback is a great program

Sorry, the windows installations is win8, with an uefi bios. the drive is 2TB and GTP, it has been opened in win 7

The mentioned SystemRescueCD also has dd for a bt-for-bit clone. And indeed I should have suggested cloning first, BazookaJoe :toast:

The data is recovered! It was not My disk, I advised using test disk. Wich is also on the disk chevalr1c said to use. The gpt table is rebuild. They Will back up now as this gave them a scare :laugh:
