to be honest, if they're corrupt they're likely completely screwed. someone may know of a recovery method, but you'd best assume they're goners now and plan for that.

If it's a .doc open them with notepad and copy all the clear text you can find. If it's a .docx or .odf try to open with WinZip or WinRAR and see if the archive can be recovered.

normally word likes making backups, not sure where they are kept but if you can find them you might be able to use the backups

i would search for backups or tmp files for Word using google that might help you find a clue as to where stuff like this is stored, because if the backup is good same with tmp files then its great.

Can you attach a sample corrupted file so we can take a look at it? (if you know that there is no confidential/private information inside it)

The one and only solution for your corrupted word documents is Kernel for Word repair software.

    Please explain...?

And I know this thread is abit of a spam magnet..for that I apologise.
Unfortunately I cannot attach one of the files due to they need to remain confidential.

    I have tried the following:

    - Several "text" recovery programs.
    - I have tried using word to repair and open the documents
    - I have tried opening the documents in several other text browsers - ie. Notepad, wordpad etc
    - I have tried using winzip, winrar and 7zip to retreive text
    - I have tried changing options in word to attempt to open the document as a draft.
    - I have tried to use word to "insert text" from the document

All these things havent worked for me yet..

Well seeing as how they are his files he may have more options to recover them if he still is using the same computer. Like Previous Version which is in Win 7 and Vista too I believe.

Try downloading and installing OpenOffice.. maybe he used that when typing it up and for some reason word or w/e can't read it.
