Hello everyone.

I have finally decided to upgrade to a bigger monitor and please my eyes. Not 100% sure though. Only 99%.

Upgrading not for gaming, but for everything else. Movies, general usage, etc.

My setup cant game at 1080p plus 1080p requires a beefy GPU, not a mid-end like mine. Not that it matters. I am/have planing/planned to game at 1600x900, which is perfectly reasonable, even if it wont be native resolution.

I planned for 27" but not enough models available plus they are extremely expensive in my country. 100$ and + more expensive (Edit: Compared to Newegg :)). Only 24" and below are properly priced.

As you may know, higher the hertz, the better. Now, my current monitor can go to maximum 75 hertz at 1400x900. If you remember your CRT days, you would know how you could have higher refresh rates as you reduced resolution. Fun days.

My monitor can go to maximum 75, even at 800x600.

All I want to know is what your 24"/1080p display can achieve at 1600x900?. That is all I want to know.

Thank You.

60hz, Thats what LCDs tend to run at unless otherwise specified. For example you can buy 120/144hz LCDs, but lowering the resolution wont increase the refresh rate like CRTs.

Yes it will. Do some more research.

Well then my screen must be broken then. Because it does NOT allow for a higher refresh rate by lowering the resolution.

My screen will only display upto 96Hz at 2560x1440. If I lower it to 1600x900, It will still only display 96Hz.

Any higher and it skips frames. My 2nd screen only allows 72Hz at 1920x1080 and at 1600x900 it still only allows 72Hz

Just because the LCD screen is displaying at a higher refresh rate setting does not mean its actually working, I can infact set the refresh rate higher then 96hz and it will show up and play games BUT it starts skipping/dropping frames.
You can use this website to check for frame skips on LCDs http://www.testufo.com/#test=frameskipping

No LCD I have ever owned allows me to run a higher rate at a lower rez like a CRT I can force it and on some of my models I can even uncheck the box to show unsupported framerates but all of them default to 60hz at every resolution.

My LCD isn't any special, yet it supports 75 Hertz at 1400x900.

There are older LCDs that supported 75hz and it seems you have one of them. I had a 1280x1024 and 1680x1050 LCD screen that supported 75hz, but that was back in 2005/7

The 1280x1024 screen was made by dell, The other one might have been LG.

Well... maybe your monitor doesn't like it.

None of the monitors I have recently owned have allowed more refresh rate with lower resolution. Which is 4 different monitors. Two of them were DVI and two running HDMI.

My best screen atm uses Dual link DVI and does not support a higher rate then 96Hz.

that's like my Philips WLED monitor lowering the resolution ain't like in the old days...

if you overclock your monitor it's a whole another story, like with my Yamakasi Catleap it does 120hz by overclocking and i am running 2560x1440.

So it does 75 hertz at 1400x900 and 75 hertz at 800x600.

I'm sorry, but telling slyfox off without supporting it with a reference, yet showing that your own lcd can't what you claim it should do, is... well... silly.

Crt's could do higher hertz with less resolution. Lcd's cannot. They allow up to a certain hertz via overclocking the panel. But that hertz is the same regardless of resolution.

Anyway, to answer your question, the only way you can guarantee to get a high hertz is to buy a monitor that already does it, then run it at whatever resolution you wish (though not running it at its native resolution isn't great for clarity of text). Other than that, digging on the web for info on how high certain panels can overclock is the other option.

I actually think though that you would be better off finding an old 21 inch crt, and gaming on that, as you say your rig can't do high res gaming. You should be able to find one on ebay possibly, and they would only be $50 or so.

I recommend it because there is nothing like gaming on a proper crt monitor, at a decent hertz. The only lcd's that come close are the very latest ones like the benq xl2720z.

Try to find a one with a sony trinitron tube. They can do 85hertz at 1280 x 1024, and they are smooth as butter at that. And 0ms input lag :)

And yep, I own both a crt and the benq mentioned. The crt is still awesome for gaming, and only the benq matches it... :) Seriously, I waited around 10 years before moving on from a crt... Imho, lcds only just caught up to the feeling that a crt gives.

Cheers,
metal
