How is this possible? W1Z already said that the 290 cards have the shaders locked by the die not the bios so this has to be a 290X core in the first place

I saw this, unlocked shaders and such. Almost bought one, then ended up spending money on a PS3 and all the bits and bobbins to make it work on a Korean Monitor and 5.1 sound system xD

My sample was locked. Maybe they used full R9 290Xs to build the first batch for retail cards, so that they could show they have product on shelves.

That is not a bad price for a "290X" either.

Something about it worries me though. I feel like whoever buys this will get some kind of unexpected downside when they use it.

Perhaps 290X are better binned? VTX3D are also under the same banner as Powercolor (i think) and i've read elsewhere it was Powercolor cards that were unlockable. Good chance it's true. It's at a much higher cost than a base 290 so OcUK are still making more money on it. £50+ in fact, so a %15 mark up for a software flash. Still, i often give OcUK a hard time but this is a good thing they are offering.

It would be against the law for OCUK to state they are if they are not, the consumer rules in the UK are very strict.

Wish I had the dosh to grab one for the delectation of TPU. Come on some UK TPU user, buy one so we can see what is what with it.

I can afford one, but see no point in buying one

only time will tell i guess but i know it wouldn't be the first time cross flashing a bios has shown extra hardware in a gpu but the performance has not matched the specs you know.

Makes me want to buy a 290 even more. The 290X is being sold here for 29,000 PhP and the 290 is being sold for 19,000 Php. That's 10,000 Php difference between the two ($200+).

I've actually just caught glimpse of this VTX3D card at another retailer (non flashed) and it's called the "X-Edition". Makes me wonder if these editions are ones that can be flashed up to the 290X and that's why the name is there. The clocks are stock so it's a huge hint.

EDIT: apparantly it boosts. Does the 290 non-X have boost?

As long as he prays daily to the cursed TJ07 case that he bought off me RCoon belongs in PC tech heaven. But when he finally sells it, the skies will darken and his soul will depart to consoles, McDonalds and Jeremy Kyle.
