Recently, Romanian president Traian Basescu met with Bill Gates. He then proceeded to tell him how his country's IT business would be nothing if it weren't for pirated Windows software. He claimed that Romania's pirated Windows really helped the younger generation get into computers, which in turn accelerated IT development. Pirated copies of Windows also helped encourage creativity with computers. Basescu claimed that if it weren't for this piracy 10 years ago, he and Bill Gates wouldn't be the good friends they are now. Bill Gates got rather quiet, as he certainly doesn't like supporting piracy of his own software. Romania introduced anti-piracy legislation 10 years ago, but there are very few arrests being made considering that an estimated 70% of the country's software is pirated.

Just goes to show, its everywhere. But this lead to a good thing as you can see how it helped them. Piracy isnt always a bad thing. (THough Bill is probably fuming really bad inside)

Piracy, can be a very good thing (not that I condone it...;) ), especially for a 'developing country' such as Romania. Lets face it, Bill Gates wipes his arse with more money than he's loosing from piracy in Romania.

    1. The romanian president is an idiot! I didn't vote for him :p
    2. He might be right, but he's not the person to say that, not officially and not to Bill Gates' face!
    3. He's an idiot!
    4. Bill Gates cannot wasn't mad at all, he didn't even comment on that. Probably because Romania has the second largest number of foreigners in Microsoft after India and is followed closely by Russia. I sincerely don't think that those people had Windows licences when they went to Microsoft with considerable knowledge about the OS considering that right now, the medium income in Romania in about 300Euros/month!!! That's how much Windows XP Pro costs here! (Home Edition is a bit under 200E)!
I don't think Russia and India are doing great when it comes to income either!

So yes, one can say that some countries have trained their IT guys on pirated software...
I might be wrong though, maybe some people are born with Windows embedded :p

Im sure Mr Gates would rather people used his software for free than having a whole nation turn to a Microsoft rival. Perhaps a bit foolish the president telling him to his face though. ;)

Where do you get your numbers man?

"the medium income in Romania in about 300Euros/month!!! That's how much Windows XP Pro costs here! (Home Edition is a bit under 200E)!"

The real medium income in Romania is actually well under 150Euro(more than 80 % of the population makes less that money....get real man ,that is fact, dont't comment on things you have no idea, and XP costs under 200 euro and Home well under 100 euro).Basescu is an idiot as you say but he only told the truth..........I am from Romania and I would proudelly buy XP it it would not cost more that i earn in one mounth.....so f.ck of bill

welcome to TPU, but in future i think youd do better avoiding violent flaming of other peoples posts. If you wish to make a correction, you can do so, present your facts and your arguement in a professional manner. Simply saying that another person is wrong is foolhardy...

its just like a kid saying "nah, im right, i dont care about your opinion."

Post some facts to back up your arguement.
Example - Census documents or surveys.
