Hey everyone,

I have a weird issue going around which I think is related to the readings of the sensors but I am not completely sure.
On some boots my GPU Reports very high idle wattage (sometimes up to 100%), on other boots it completely does not read any power at all.

The weird part is on the boots where the very high idle wattage occur, my GPU is power throttling to 300 MHz at all times. For normal usages this is fine but in games this causes very low FPS.
It will also say PerfCap Reason pwr whether it displays 20% TDP or 100% TDP.

On boots where the power is not being read I can play for 4-5 hours straight on normal fps. (Highest temp was 75C with the hot spot being 87C, CPU also stays under 65C at all times.)
Most of this testing was done with Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth. (15 FPS with high idle wattage compared to 140+- FPS when the wattage displays 0)

I have attached a log file from GPU-Z and was just hoping for a push into the right direction where to look.

2024-02-02 20:19:36 - This is what happens when I start up a game, I see the GPU Usage go up but nothing else really seems to change.

2024-02-02 20:25:57 - Boot starting with the high power readings, the only thing that seems different from the one where I was playing was the GPU Usage.
2024-02-02 21:07:19 - Idle when the wattage sensors arent being read.
2024-02-02 21:13:06 - Starting and playing Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth when the sensors arent being read, at this point it will work well until I eventually reboot, at that point it really feels like RNG whether the GPU will work or not.

Its been happening on and off for about a month, happens once every 2 days. But it seems to be happening more often lately. The only thing I remember was leaving a game open for 3-4 hours and when I came back I suddenly had 15 FPS instead of the usual 100+.
I tried DDU and took my GPU in and out. Nothing else so far.
I added most of my specs of my PC. If any more info is needed I will supply. It was a new 2070 Super at the time and the BIOS is stock.

Solution
Classic power sensing circuit failure, it's a hardware problem, this has to be fixed either by repairing the circuit, doing a shunt mod or a vbios with no power limit (don't know about that).

Sounds like a hardware issue to me. Some reading is just on the edge of kicking the GPU into power limit limp mode. Like a current shunt is out of spec or the current monitoring circuitry is messed up.

Can you get the card replaced?

First of all thank you! Sadly it is out of warranty, does kinda confirm my suspicion that one reading is completely off. I will probably give it one more shot reseating it tomorrow and otherwise see if my old GPU atleast behaves normally with the rig. If that is the case I will figure out where to go from there.

Also thank you for confirming, seems like there atleast is a clear consensus haha.
Kinda sad considering the card was still doing very fine for my 1080p gaming needs.
I will definitely have to decide what way I will choose to fix it. I guess I will get back about that later this weekend!

I think a shunt mod it's the easiest thing to do if you decide to try it yourself.

Quick update, I was about to look into the shunt mod as I decided to atleast test out my old 1050 TI to 1000% rule out that anything else was faulty, that one worked fine. When I put my 2070 Super back in I decided to change the 6 pin and 8 pin power cables (they were both 6+2 so I could just swap them), after that I have been getting normal readings and it does not give me the PerfCap Reason Pwr until when it is supposed too. I did try making sure these were clean and swapped before so I still have a feeling this is not the end of the issue. If this stays this way for the rest of the day I consider this issue fixed. Both thanks a lot for the help.
