Hi all,

new to the forum and Pc gaming in general so please go easy. I've just fitted my pc with an R9 380x and the GPU fans seem to be very loud and run at around 3000 rpm from the moment i power up the machine to the moment I switch it off. I've tried setting custom fan settings in both AMD Radeon Settings and MSI afterburner but it does not alter fan speed at all. GPU-Z reports my GPU temp at 29 - 30 degrees C but GPU fans still sound as though they are running at full tilt. Is this normal ???

Specs:

Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P AMD 970 ATX
Processor - AMD FX6300
PSU - EVGA 500W 80 Plus 100-w1-0500KR
GPU Sapphire R9 380x Nitro

I've tried google but I'm struggling to find much info so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Simon.

So no matter what your reading your card at 3000 RPM and same sounds coming from the fans (IE high fan speed noise). Does it change when gaming, or any loads?

If its not adjusting at all, try flipping a bios switch on the card (If equipped) and see if that helps or changes anything. Also make sure to try a recent version of Catalyst to see if anything changes. If not, then its likely a bad fan controller on the card and I would exchange it (I've seen something similar happen before).

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
I would try reloading drivers... but this time, use DDU to clean out before you install the new ones.

I reviewed this card and did not see this problem (with new Crimson driver).

The card does NOT have a bios switch, FYI.

Hi that sapphire has Intelligent Fan Control and with those teps it should be dead silent.

EarthDog was faster with the answer :) my recommendation would have been same you can download DDU here LINK

Hi GhostRyder thanks for your response,

yes no matter what user defined fan speeds in Radeon Settings and Afterburner the fan speed remains the same. Also fan speed does not change when under load, ie. playing modded Skyrim or GTA V.

I originally installed the drivers that came with the card and tried to manually adjust fan speed using catalyst control centre but this made no difference so I updated the driver from the AMD website and now have Radeon Settings (CCC replacement?) but still no joy. I will look into the bios switch point and give it a go.

Many thanks for confirming my suspicions that the card is most likely faulty.

Hi EarthDog and Countryside thank you for your responses,

I've used DDU to clean out old drivers in Safe Mode. I'm currently on Radeon-Crimson-15.11 for Win7 64bit but the problem persists. I noticed that the fans were still running fast when in safe mode. Does this rule out driver issues ?

With that information, yes it seems that it not a driver issue.

I've removed and replaced the card and checked the power cables and problem is still there. Also I've had an R9 270X working in the same PCI E slot so I'm fairly certain it's not that. To be honest I was looking for confirmation that I had not done anything stupid and that it was time to contact the vendor and rma the card. Looks like it'll be a few more days before I can enjoy GTA V with V High Textures :banghead:

Many thanks for your help guys,

Simon.

I thought 15.11 had issues with fans thats why they released 15.11.1? not sure if it applys to windows 7 drivers though.

Hi animal007uk thanks for your response,

I've just gone on to the AMD website and looked for the latest drivers and come up with this. I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes.

If that does not work, I am going to guess its a fan controller issue or something similar on the card. At that point I would RMA/return it for another one as it happens.

That issue was, under load some cards fans speed stayed at 20% and overheated.

I assume that you downloaded the latest drivers form AMD website and you already did a clean driver install and checked if the card is correctly placed. It seems that you have to rma it.

Hi all,

just uninstalled current driver using DDU and installed latest version. Problem persists. Fans remained at constant speed throughout the whole process. I'm fairly certain now that it's a hardware issue and you guys have been very helpful in confirming that.

Many thanks,

Simon.

Hi all,

I thought I'd just update this thread with my progress a) to find out if anyone has had similar experiences and can share any tips or advice and b) as a warning in general to anyone buying pc components online.

As the above thread explains I bought a Gpu online (www.scan.co.uk) that was faulty as soon as I installed it into my machine. I followed correct procedure (drivers etc) but the fault remained so contacted the vendor. I was told by the vendor to return the item in suitable packaging so they could test the item themselves and confirm the fault. I did this and eventually I received an email stating that my warranty request had been refused and that I must contact Scan customer services. I was informed by Scan customer services that the Gpu had been severely physically damaged to the point where their engineer was unable to install it into a test machine to verify the original fault. They claimed that as the item was suitably packaged for the return the damage must have been caused when I installed the card onto my machine. Whilst i'm fully aware this now becomes a "my word against theirs" situation I dispute damaging the card in any way and installed and uninstalled it my end without any problems. I was even able to have the above conversation on this forum with the card installed albeit running extremely loudly.

I have since contacted Citizens Advice as I believe you now have to go through them to lodge a complaint with Trading Standards. However Citizens advice simply stated that when returning faulty goods to a supplier the burden of proof is with the consumer and not the retailer to prove that the item is faulty. When I asked how I was supposed to do that in this situation I was told that I should have had the card independently verified to be faulty before returning to vendor. So in a nutshell there's nothing much I can do.

Sorry for the long post guys just wondered if anyone had any advice and thought this could be useful info to anyone buying components online.

Simon.

"In suitable packaging" surely it was a new retail card so should have been properly packaged and unable to be physically damaged without some severe damage to the box? ask for proof in photographs of the damage they have told you about to the card and the box that it was sent back in, something definitely isn't right here. not really had to return too much to Scan myself though haven't really heard many nightmare stories regarding their service either compared to some other UK online stores.

Hi,

yes the card was new and was returned to vendor in original packaging plus bubble wrap and cardboard. Scan customer services have confirmed that they were happy that I'd packaged the item sufficiently and also confirmed there was no damage to the package or evidence of tampering. This leaves two possibilities, either myself or scan have damaged the card. I am arguing that Scan have damaged it but it appears I am unable to prove this. I will be going back to Scan to request photos etc but thought I'd go on a bit of a fact finding mission first. Forearmed is forewarned etc.

*Update* Whilst writing this reply I've received a call from Scan stating they believe there was a problem with the Sapphire packaging and they are considering pulling the range from stock ?? When I questioned this further they told me the problem occurred during transit from me to them so not really sure what he's getting at there. However the upshot is I am entitled a refund or replacement so I'm not complaining. All they ask is can I cancel my Paypal dispute lol.

Anyhow many thanks for you response, hopefully this is sorted now.

I think that sounds like BS and someone realised they'd messed up! and you should get the replacement sent out or a refund before you cancel the dispute IMO. Either way, that's better news than a half an hour ago! ;) :toast:

Yes it was an interesting conversation to say the least. Still if they do what they say they are going to do I will give them the benefit of doubt.......and remove my paypal complaint. Cheers :toast: :peace:

I think @NdMk2o1o is right because once you cancel the PP dispute, you can't reopen (pretty sure you can't) should things continue badly. I did this once years ago: seller promised this and that if I canceled the dispute, I canceled it, bad idea, and I couldn't reopen, ended up losing the money :(

I hope the do as they have promised! :)

Hi all,

thanks for all your responses. Glad I came here first before doing anything rash. I've been in contact with Scan again today and have been told by their returns manager that Scan are unable to process a refund until I cancel my Paypal dispute. He explained that the funds are currently held by Paypal and Scan have no control over them until I cancel the dispute ??!! A quick browse of the Paypal resolution help center tells me that a vendor is able to access the dispute from their end but only to administer a refund (seems sensible). By administering the refund from their end the dispute then automatically becomes resolved. Am I being paranoid or is this quickly beginning to look a bit dodgy ?

Anyone had any similar experiences ?

Simon.

I doubt it's anything dodgy in all honesty, Scan are a big well known online retailer, probably being over cautious about refunding or replacing the GPU and then you getting the money back via PP dispute, as long as you have it all in emails from them go ahead and close the dispute and I'm sure they will honour the refund. Personally I would only open a dispute as a last resort when comms had broken down with the seller and there was no other way to get my money back.
