One aspect nobody has mentioned yet - these cards are great news for the kind of person who values "stylin' and profilin'' above all else - they can still do 4 cards in Crossfire, and for around $1000 all told (those poor nVidia "losers" will have to settle for 2 x SLI going forward). And, as a bonus, the 4 cards will run games almost as fast as two GTX 970s! (when they're not throttling due to heat issues). Put more RGB LEDs all over these cards and they'll sell millions of them. Because we are now suddenly thrust into an era when bling is king, and motherboards are RMAed because the LEDs stopped working! (Apologies to those with legitimate or professional reasons to run 4 cards). I'll be skipping this round of upgrades (my single overclocked 780 Ti still serves me well @2k). Waiting for a single card that can easily run all games @4k, (perhaps the 1080 Ti?) - then the monitor upgrade to 4k will be doable for those of us who would rather avoid the problems/expense of running multiple cards..
Utter drivel and hate there bud, one of these toasting your 780ti seams to have you rattled, it beats my 390 too but I'm not bitching and I bought mine 6 months ago ish ,grow up.
As for bling the ref 480X looks bland you nutter ,plain black shroud, now a 1080 has ally bling, get that.

With the Founder's Edition pricing causing inflation, and custom cards going higher, all the RX 480 8GB has to do is beat GTX 980 performance to outsell 1080'S AND 1070's at the current price structure.

Straw-into-Gold-thumb.jpg

......seems like a easy enough task

no doubt this cards gonna be nice for its price point but we gotta curb the enthusiasm a little......

These are "leaked" specs, but if the 1.6Ghz OC rumors are true, the 480 might just edge the 980.

To be honest, I haven't seen 2 wire (DC) fans since days of those little fart fans that rotated at fixed speed. With dynamic fan control, they all use PWM fans (4 wires).

I'm sure Nvidia thanks you for that FUD.
RX480 overclocked is close to GTX1070 performance levels, from what I have seen.
Two GTX970's won't even get close to four RX480's once drivers are mature and scaling improves.

Isn't proper 3-card or 4-card scaling a bit of wishful thinking? Or am I just overly skeptical?

It is wishful thinking, but two cards in crossfire should scale fine

Who would have thought that AMD only released the R9 3xx cards for show, when actually there was something big like this around the corner... I mean, why not sell a two year old rebranded card with $100 markup as brand new technology, to empty stocks, before releasing the actually new tech. Nobody could have predicted that

To be fair it was a refresh, and the 390 8GB rivaled the GTX 970, forcing NVIDIA to lower it's pricing.

Tests have indicated that power consumption sits around the 100w mark. The cooler is rated for 150w anyway so there's some head room for OCing even with the reference cooler.
Yeah, That's what i was implying that quite simpler cooler because polaris thermal output is very low in respect to previous AMD cards.
That's why simple metal heatsink & blower , No fancy stuff.

Guys, looks like this card would be very short with a water block. Any measurements??

My guess is that for both the already low thermals and the expense it would be a waste to put this card underwater.
I could be wrong, but I even wonder if a water block will be produced for this card.

Isn't proper 3-card or 4-card scaling a bit of wishful thinking? Or am I just overly skeptical?

I think as a few people have pointed out he was openly mocking and dissing the "losers" who would buy 4 of these cards to try and match 2 or less Nvidia cards and was also being critical at those who would buy these for "bling" reasons. Any doubt to his intentions is when he apologized to those who do use 4 cards for professional or enthusiast reasons....He was criticizing AMD and rx480's not Nvidia, whole bunch of tongue and cheek and sarcasm there. However despite a few people thinking he was full of "hate" and so on I think whether you like it or not he makes valid points....who the fuck cares about 4 way crossfire if you "only" get 2x SLI with Nvidia and you blow it away? Plus he makes the obvious point of how bad they'd heat up cramped in a case with shitty blower style stock coolers that suck even in single configurations.

And yeah as the final caveat to that 3 and 4 card scaling generally is terrible and you get such diminishing returns on games and even graphical programs for the juice you spend on the cards unless you're going for World Records or just E-peen stats when you benchmark anything over 2 cards is generally an utter waste of time AND energy AND money.

It's been more of a strong tailwind being blown, as in what was emanating from the rear of disappointed users.

HEHE I loved this:). This coming from btw a former fx-55 Athlon user who loved it! I still have my abit 8 board and I think the fx-55 resting in the socket packed in a closet somewhere:). Ah, glorious 90 nm or whatever it was 2002 front side bus overclocking ddr2 days:). Last game I think I played on that system was Elder scrolls iv Oblivion:).

I'm just making an observation and yes, it has some benefits. These practices are normal and accepted, you don't have to tell me that. People bought those cards happily at the time without knowing that their value will drop down half in less than 6 months. But AMD knew and still did it to make some quick cash from very old tech, selling it as very new tech. Probably most of those cards were bought by the uninformed consumers, but they should have probably done their research, right? And btw, the 390 got released almost a year after the 970, and it was still much older tech than 970! So if they release their ancient Hawaii cards as new tech and uninformed consumers buy them, yea, Nvidia will be forced to slash their prices. It maybe helps some people here that read TPU, but at the end of the day most consumers who bought the 3xx series will look at the 480 next week and feel ripped off.
