Recognising the demand for a lower cost solution to using the DisplayPort output for a third monitor in ATI Eyefinity mode on its HD 5000 series cards, SAPPHIRE Technology has just introduced a DisplayPort to Single Link DVI adapter.

Eyefinity mode requires the third monitor to be either a DisplayPort (DP) monitor or a monitor connected with an active adapter to synchronise the signals for a DVI or HDMI monitor. Earlier active DP to Dual Link DVI adapters were considered to be too expensive by many users who did not need ultra high resolution.

SAPPHIRE's new DP to Single Link DVI adapter is an active solution in a short pigtail format with DP plug to DVI female connector that allows users to connect DVI monitors with resolutions of up to 1920 x 1200. Used with a DP equipped SAPPHIRE HD 5000 series graphics card, this enables landscape Eyefinity modes of up to 5760 x 1200, including 5760 x 1080 with widescreen monitors, as well as portrait modes of up to 3600 x 1920.

SAPPHIRE is offering this solution to make Eyefinity more affordable for users with existing DVI monitors, or wishing to match up existing monitor styles.

No mention of actual price. How does it compare to the same thing that AMD just released for $30?

Well it is a different design, especially at the DVI end, it is more bulky. So they definitely didn't just take the AMD one and rebrand it.

I think the point of AMD's is that it's HDCP compliant. This doesn't mention anything to that effect.

As far as I know you will see Sapphire, XFX and PowerColor each release branded versions of the adapters as well as OEM version by WEISON and ACCELL so it should be the same $30 adapter

this had better be bundled with high end sapphire 6000 series cards, say perhaps the 6850 and higher, depending on performance.

No need for This.

I have been running Eyefinity without a single problem using one DVI to VGA and two with DVI to DVI. No active displayport adapter needed.:)

dont you mean DVI -> VGA, DVI and HDMI? in any case I've heard of people doing this because VGA too only needs one of the six link thingies that 5000 series cards have. TDMS or something.

I beleive you only need an Active adapter if you're running a resolution above 1920x1200.....i think

get the AMD one and use a different plastic shell?

its still a cheap, single link, active DP to DVI adaptor

I think the point of AMD's is that it's HDCP compliant. This doesn't mention anything to that effect.

I think the point of these adapters in the first place is to maintain HDCP compliance. As the passive ones seem to break HDCP and cause a lot of the problems.

Well as someone already pointed out, even AMD's one is a rebranded ACCELL adapter, and it looks like this Sapphire one is rebranded Wieson.

Either way, the price should be right around $30.
