Seagate must be pinching pennys again with their recent run of 2tb Goflex external USB3.0 harddrives. I've been purchasing these for less then a bare 2tb drive and, until recently, they contained Seagate model ST2000DM001 7200RPM drives sporting a 64mb buffer. Diskmark pulls off 162MB/s on it.

The latest batch contains a Seagate ST2000DL001 5900RPM drive with a 32mb buffer. This is their "Green" drive. Diskmark resulted in 143MB/s on that one.

They use cheaper drives but I pay the same. Fail on you Seagate.

I'm frustrated at the marketing strategies used by manufacturers that take advantage of peoples ignorance. In this example, Seagate states this "Most Flexible Versatile Hard Drive" is "10x faster then USB 2.0". The USB3.0 interface may be 10x faster then USB2.0 but this "Most Flexible Versatile Hard Drive" is not 10x faster then USB2.0. Their statement claims this drive gets 4800mb/s.

We all know how a drive's internal transfer rate limit what the drive can do on any interface so this needs no correction. My frustration is for the unknowing customer who buys the drive expecting at least some improvement over their 2.0 drive. Not only is the USB version irrelevant, Seagate further caps it's potential by downgrading to a 5900RPM drive with 32mb less cache. This drive is actually slower then a USB 2.0 enclosure containing a 7200RPM drive.

    $.02 / fwiw / afaik / etc

USB 2.0 theoretical transfer rate is 480mbps but you will only get ~35MB/s

    For instance:

USB 2.0 with Corsair Performance Pro SSD

Same Drive but with USB 3.0

Thanks for the heads up though I was literally going to grab one of those tomorrow morning. Time to revisit before going to Microcenter.
