    some incredibly shallow people lol

you don't spend $300 on a water cooling kit so you can overclock a $100 entry level CPU. you spend $1400 on a headphone your going to want to get the best out of it and it starts with a good source and amplifier. it's an investment.

The benefits of the headphones are obvious as well when you listen to them properly.

And to throw some more fuel to the fire...probably the most controversial person ever in the headphone amp business (and I believe what he says!):

I swear audio freaks are far worse than the graphics people...even the biggest NVIDIA/ATI flamewars are little skirmishes compared to what goes on in "audiophile" forums.

Grado SR60i or SR80i Best headphones under $100, and only the 80s might require amplification, and I am not a pure audiophile, but I truely have no issue spending 6-9k on a system for my car. However that includes many many many many more parts, and just cans/amp! lol

And you all should respect Bumblebee's obvious hobby, cans are a part of his life, we all have our vices! I was spending 100$ a month on League of Legends skins a few months ago lol. Alot of us have all sorts of budgets and loves in the world and we all have different comfort levels when it comes to consumer purchases, I can't spend more than 50$ on a shirt or pants, and I'm an investment company manager. But I wont be phased at a 3500$ home office desk becuase in my past life I sold very high end artisan furniture and I justify the cost.

I think you are right about it being worse. But the reason behind that is that people which aren't even interested in hi-fi, come in and say it's just overpriced junk (with no idea about the engineering and components/materials used).
If I made a thread in the GPU forums saying that the HD7970/GTX680 are both slower than an old HD3870 and that they are overpriced I bet I would be jumped in minutes
GPU's aren't subjective like audio is and that's why "flamewars" start.

I agree that just because some headphones cost $1000 that doesn't mean everyone will like them (like I said sound is subjective and every headphone has it's own sound signature), but you have a choice on what to buy and in what price range. There are no "the best" headphones/amps, it may be best for one person but mediocre for someone else ;)

I didn't say it can't run them, I said it probably doesn't run them to their full potential. HD800/HD650 scale with the quality of the amps a lot.
Heck even my Essence can drive HD800, but it can't drive them properly or to their full potential.
It's like having a 500HP engine in a car and you put cheap tyres that have no grip at all.

the Sennheiser HDVA 800 is a integrated DA converter and headphone amp.

the $3000 you would spend on the Sennheiser HD800, a reference level DA converter and a high end tube/solid state amplifier is a bargain. the 20 minutes I have spent with the Sennheiser HD800 sound better than any $1400 loud speaker I have ever heard. if you wanted to build a speaker system that sounded just as good it would cost a lot more money.
