Hi everyone I am currently hosting a few game servers for friends and friends of friends. Everything is going smooth but I need to improve performance. Currently the system is a budget built FX6300 not over clocked. I want to get more performance out of the machine and want to guarantee over all stability and for such I managed to get my xeon 3520 running again. The big question is will the Xeon 3520 give me the CPU over head that I need or is the old nehalem architecture too dated to keep up with vishera chips?

I need some extra performance and I want to build a newer server in time but to do it right takes time and money. I am willing to make use of my old server hardware and get off consumer grade equipment even if the system is older but before I start migrating I am asking the community what you think about the jump. Any thoughts?

I think the Vishera and Nehalem will be pretty close, but I think the Vishera will win out simply because of its much higher clock speed. I don't think it would be worth the time/effort to migrate to the Nehalem system.

Personally, I'd upgrade to an 8320 and overclock it slightly. Or if you don't want to spend any money right now, overclock the FX-6300 slightly.
