It depends on the version - Min is 4gb max is 128gb - more than enough for anything you could dream of doing with your computer (perverts not included)

I really do hope your money doesnt go to waste, but if you paid attention to what the thousands here are saying, then you would opt to spend your money on parts and an operating system that would better suit you and benefit your hardware performance wise.

IUt sounds like one of the chips on your ram is defective. Vistax32 uses less ram so in all likelyhood nothing is going thru the faulty chip so no error.
When you use vista x64 it's using all your ram and so is sending information thru that chip
Run memory diagnostic in vista x64 to check your ram
Control Panel>adminstrative tools>memory diagnostic
