I am considering getting a new GPU. In all honesty i don't really need it for what little games i do play but have the upgrade itch.

right now i game on a 19" screen ATM but, will be switching to a 56" plasma 1080p within the next 6 months(assuming i get a job and moved by then)

so what card would be best for me?

    uses
    light gaming
    folding
    TPU

also as a note i will be keeping the 8800GTS as a PhysX and folding card.

please don't tell me different options if they are over $160 shipped

best bet is to check out w1zzards reviews to give you a good idea of what kinda FPS both cards will give you.

well considering one of your main uses is folding i would go with the nvidia.

Wasn't there a thread a little while ago about some lagging with the 460 768MB? I think SP was using it @ 1080 and it was lagging hard in particle heavy races in Dirt2 or something.

I probably wouldn't take the 460 if 1080 is in your future. A used 1gb 460 would be better I think and could probably be had within your budget.

that is a big reason why i am being pulled toward the Nvidia but i am wondering if a 6850 could handle the big screen better then a 460 768mb.
I know that no matter the choice i will have to get a 2nd one later down the road(doesn't matter if i get SLI or Xfire thanks to being on the X58)

@onedub I haven't seen that thread. I am trying to avoid used if possible.

Now that I think about it, it was erocker who was having the issue. I am with you 100% that the AMD 6850 would handle the 1080 screen better than the 460.

Folding would be no comparison, but I think you will still have good production with the 8800 going as long as you are willing to revisit the hassle that is mixed AMD/NVIDIA folding and the occasional shortage of AMD WUs.

I used to fold with a 8800gt and 3870 both in the same rig so i know that it can be a hassle to setup but isn't that bad once running.

I think no matter what i go with it will be a nice step up from my 8800

the 6850 will do better at your resolution due to more memory. only get a 460 if its a 1gb card

If you can find a 1gb 460 go for that for folding reasons. Otherwise get the 6850. Surprisingly 768mb just isn't enough for anything over 1080p.
