Shutting down, hibernating, or sleeping?

Going by turning off at night and being booted in the morning, what is best overall for the system?

I use sleep. Uses 3 w and reboot every week or two. Hibernation is for laptops. Uses 0 w. I don't think ether way is harmful or good.

With a HDD, I'd say sleep. With an SSD, I'd just shutdown and reboot, takes such little time.

I have always shut down my own machines every night (even during the day if I know I will be gone). I haven't encountered any issues besides a little boredom as it boots up in the morning.

Sleep and hibernation states have improved over the years but sleep has killed a lot of older computers (circa 2000). I have found that hard drives and power supplies tend to last the longest in computers that aren't running when necessary.

Speaking of ... I just built a new PC with an AMD Kaveri and Windows 7 64 and the option sleep is greyed out, I get shut down and hibernate; it's funny, on my PC (see specs) I get sleep and shut down not hibernate. I tried the bios but I'm clueless. Any ideas?

Power Options > change Plan settings > Advanced Power Settings. under sleep check the settings

Hibernation uses same power as off (nothing).
Standby uses a few watts of power and sometimes lets the case fans run (noise), still better than just letting the system sit at idle.

If you don't use hibernation you can free up some disk space by running "powercfg -h off" on a command prompt as administrator

I remote desktop into my work PC all the time so it needs to be on and too lazy to configure wake on LAN. Power companies will thank me.

When sleep is grayed out it probably means that you're missing a driver required to do it or rather a device is incapable of going to sleep, but more often than not it's drivers that haven't been installed. I would make sure you're not missing any chipset or something.

I turn mine off completely. The last time I used the sleep feature my machine would not come back up. I had to turn off the PSU and take the ram out before it would come back on. I have not used it since. (was on an old build)

You may have a device that is not compatiable with sleep states or it could be a driver causing it... like this one ( Sleep Option greyed out ), that was caused by a generic display driver.

Make sure all your drivers are up to date and all drivers are installed.
Look in device manager, see if there are any devices that are generic or unknown.

And, here is an explanation of the BIOS ACPI settings --> Difference between S1 (POS) and S3 (STR) standby mode in BIOS?

You might want to start a thread, if you want to get into fixing it.

I dislike Hibernate because it uses so much disk space. Even on a big drive, I take it as a personal affront that so much space is being set aside, so I always turn it ogg and permanently delete the hyberfil file or whatever it is..lol, I can't remember at the moment what it is.

As for sleep, I hate fiddling with the sleep states....I usually get something set wrong I think, because I can't get it to wake up, and have to do a hard shutdown.

So, it's full power for me, and shut down if I'm not using.

sleep is fine on modern boards the difference between sleep and "off" is about 10W

I was told that hibernating would sometimes not let hard drives boot up. (From my tech teacher, I guess he was stuck on his P4 days)

I loved using hibernation, always quick to come back and always worked. Sleep is just.. Eh. I'd rather save every little bit of electricity.

Hibernate does a full memory dump onto your hard drive (the computer will not be taking in any power and RAM is volatile), so the space it reserves is equal to the amount of RAM you have.

I use sleep since I'm a lazy bum. And I like the faint sound of my fans.

Well Aquinus what do you know? I had a yellow mark on device manager for PCI device, I installed drivers and rebooted, sleep option still greyed out.

Thanks 95Viper; it's a new system and all drivers are up to date. As there is no SSD on this PC, hibernation takes forever.

Well Aquinus what do you know? I had a yellow mark on device manager for PCI device, I installed drivers and rebooted, sleep option still greyed out.

Did you install AMD video drivers? Only if you install the video drivers sleep will be enabled (at least that is how I have seen before)

I shut down 1-2x a day. It stays off at night.
~15-30 seconds of boot really doesn't bother me
