Upgrade to an Extreme Edition Six Core?

  1. Part out Q9650 rig, get an i7 9X0X instead and use up the spares!

    Here's the situation:

I have a spare 880W PSU and a spare DFI X58 motherboard (I nabbed the eVGA X58 I have now for cheap here on the forums and I picked up the Corsair TX750 on an insane sale). I can get an i7 980X (Or a 990X, when it launches )for 495$ and I can part out my Q9650 box (Mobo, CPU and RAM) to fund myself the new CPU and I'll cover the cost of some RAM.

The dilemma is: I buy CPUs from work and the terms of the sale (and the reason for the massive discount) include me being unable to resell them for three years from the date of purchase (unless I quit my job or get fired, that is). My 975 was bought around June 2009, so that one has more than a year and a half to go on it - This will probably be towards the Sandy Bridge die shrink time, if the road map is to be believed.

Essentially, I'll be trading my resell freedom and my Q9650 box for an el-cheapo upgrade to a hyperthreaded six-core. The Q9650 is the fastest non-extreme edition LGA775 chip, so I bet its value will not degrade anytime soon.

The question is: Is it worth it?

    Edit:
Also - How much do you think a Q9650 will fetch on fleabay? I've seen them at around 230$ with 3 days to go on the auction. Interested in the case it doesn't go here locally.

It really depends on what you do on your system, don't waste money on a six core if it's only going to be used mainly for word processing and even just gaming. The Q9650 is still a great CPU and you shouldn't have much of a hard time with anything on that chip. Get the six core if you're really going to use it, Photoshop, CAD work, heavy gaming etc. Now if you can get the six core for cheap like you said, then it might be worth it in that regard. But you have to decide whether or not you're wasting money on something you really might not take advantage of anyways.

I'd probably go for around $210 on eBay for the Q9650. It's still an awesome chip.

Why would I be looking for a sidegrade at best (if not an outright downgrade) compared to my current i7 setup ?

Yeah, it will - Assuming I do not get fired until then. That's also one more reason why I am not just rushing into the buy.
