Hi, I posted a question about the Intel 750 PCIe SSD a couple of days ago. I been looking at the Samsung SM951. It looks like it's better on a client desktop then the Intel 750 PCIe SSD. Would any recommend the SM951 over the Intel 750 PCIe. I know if I get the SMP951 I would need to get PCIe x4 card since my motherboard doesn't have a PCIe M2 slot. I mainly use my desktop for gaming and working with VMs for my work. I initial thought I would be using my desktop for work but that's no longer the case. Thanks for any advice.

David

The smallest 750 you can get is 480GB whereas there are 128GB and 256GB versions of SM951. If you would like to save some money and go for smaller capacity, SM951 is your only option. Otherwise the 750 will save you from paying for an M.2 adapter.

Even if you have a 9 series board with M.2 slot, you will still need an adapter to get maximum performance because the aforementioned slot only conforms to Gen.2 x2.

I would go SM951 (NVMe) just for the flexibility of being able to use either PCIe slot or M.2 slot.

M.2 Adapter Cards can be had for less than $30

$18.99 - http://www.addonics.com/products/adm2px4.php
can these be booted to or do i need UEFI or a modern mobo?

(shoot, reminds me, should update my specs... that 4870x2 died almost 2 years ago, didnt replace with 660 until january, on top of that i use a laptop instead)

I'm pretty sure the Samsung is OEM only and doesn't have a warranty if bought through a retail channel.
I decided against it and figured I'd sit it out until a few more retail products appeared. FWIW, the 951 isn't compatible with Samsung's own 'magician' SSD software, nor is it the easiest bootable drive.

Sure! As long as your board supports booting from an add-on card. I know in my BIOS/UEFI I have an option specifically called "Boot from add-on card : enable/disable"
