that's stupid. just saying. seriously though, that would be a horrible marketing strategy.
they may be an evil corporation but they still care, about money. your idea would make
them less.
Lets consider a few things.
1) Sony initially denied that Anonymous performed the attack.
2) Sony waited until they had no other option than to tell consumers they had been hacked. Not even a freaking mass e-mail.
3) When it was apparent that this would be a long outage Sony "found" a document that said it was Anonymous. Except this does not jibe with their ideals, and it was a poorly constructed letter that was, at best, dubiously linked to Anonymous.
4) If Anonymous brought down Sony they would hurt their own members. How many of them do you think are gamers?
*now on to the response*
5) Sony offered 1 month of free service to a service they had said would be free from the start.
6) Sony shelled out hundreds of thousands of dollars to banks, while telling consumers it was their responsibility to cover their own a$$es when it came to their credit cards.
7) When the public saw this for the B$ that it was they decided to give people 1 free game, as long as it was part of a franchise that already had sequels on the market or had them coming soon.
8) Sony continues to be hacked. As though taking down 1 part of the network doesn't tell you to revamp security everywhere else immediately. SECURITY 101 IDIOTS!
Do I believe it was an inside job, no. Do I believe it was Anonymous, no. Do I think Sony will permanently lose customers, yes. Do I think Sony is misguided in how they are handling this, yes. Will there be more hacks, they will continue until Sony gets off its high horse and fixes its assumption that consumers are willing to eat any crap it puts out.
Historically, I support a little bit of tom-foolery against Sony. Their DRM has destroyed computers, they have some pretty shady views on what their end user license agreement allows, and they treat customers as criminals. They are rapidly destroying what good will they have left from the walkman, PS1, and PS2. There will be a day whenever they are out of good will. What then Sony?
This aside, hacking the PSN was stupid. Taking down the store, screwing with their website, or making all DLC free for 24 hours would be more like what anonymous stands for. This is blatant thievery that Sony wants to blame on Anonymous, because a scapegoat that can't deny accusations is the perfect scapegoat.
