Looks like a horrible picture. Get a few angles and a clear picture and we can probably tell you more accurately

It's a thermal pad. my old 6800 has it, and it's crap. It was supposed to transfer heat from the RAM to the stock heatsink.

Installing that Intel fan must make it increadibly noisey!?

Well why I wanted a clearer pic is to make sure it wasn't a damn sticker, like I've seen under SOME cpu's between the heatsink. After people take their system apart, for running like ass, theres a nice half burnt sticker on it lol

I would've used that whole HSF if I was you, not just the fan. More air doesn't always = cooler. More surface area to transfer heat to does!

But yes, if that is the foam 'thermal' pad, they do suck. Get the job done for stock, but do suck heh.

It's quite thick, so it's definitely a thermal pad. Yes, they do suck, and they are not that efficient. I prefer to remove them, and the stock heatsink, and use ramsinks. A much better solution.

I did not use the larger heatsink because if I want to RMA the card again, I don't have any thermal pad all I got it thermal grease.

You sure that heatsink uses a thermal pad on the CPU? :p My Sapphire didn't. Unless you mean the ram pads, in that case, most companies don't seem to remove the other plastic piece to adhere to the ram. So removing the heatsink is a breeze.

you would be better off with either a vf900cu or thermalright hr-03 instead of that homemade cooler. thats prolly why your old card died.

get a better heatsink + some ramsinks. i got some evercool (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835119061) ramsinks on my x1800 but they are out of stock currently.

The VF9000c Fatality comes with them. I think the Accelero x2 is an all-in-on. Only $25 in the states, not sure on it's price down under.

Dude the VF/AcceleroX2 > Ghetto mod anytime of the week, doing ghetto modding voids warranty.

EDIT: If you go with modding of your cooler, you SHOULD know what the stuff is supposed to do.

No the old card died because the f**King atitool stuff it up. VF900 cost like what 60~70 AUS and my heatsink cost non. And you are saying that the Vf900 can do better ? 20~25*C off the idle and load ? I don't think so. Its all about saving money and invest not just keep spending mate.

Sure, how would ATI tool destroy your GPU?

EDIT 2#: Dont blame it on ATI tool, its quite obvious how the GPU died, ESD, heck why are you taking pictures of the GPU on CARPET? heeelooo

Your brick of aluminum might cool it better than stock, but an accelero x1 or vf900 would still do a better job, and be silent.

I believe he is saying that you may have damaged your card by not placing it in an ESD safe environment( e.g carpet = static, static + electrical equipment = bad  ).

To your orig post, I had those pads on my 6800gt which I removed and placed thermal compound on instead. You just need to make sure that your heatsink touches your RAM without the pads.

Unless you were stoned when I was posting that ESD is electrostatic damage, its quite obvious that you know it doesnt exist. ATI tool didnt fk your card up, ESD did, carpet is one of the most abundant places for ESD to occur.

If he used that black cooler on his last cards GPU (is that an older XEON heatsink? lol), then it's probably user error.

Anyway you look at it, it's probably going to be user error. IF ATi Tools fried it, its your fault for setting something wrong. If ESD killed it, well thats your stupidity for laying it on the carpet. If the heatsink or fan kill it, then thats just your inexperience in moding, and doing it foolishly.

Software can't kill hardware. If it could, don't you think Virus coders would be frying boxes instead of windows installs or infesting it? We can't even overload the 1950 GPU with voltage because it is regulated past a certain amount. If it died while running the 3D Renderer, then it was faulty hardware and that just was what finally did it in.

You obiously have never seen the effects of what static can do, I work in an ESD safe environment where we still get issues from static, small quote

"What we call "Static electricity" also has another name: "high voltage." All of the familiar electrostatic phenomena which we encounter in everyday situations always involve voltages above 1,000V, and ranging up to around 50,000 volts at the most. If it attracts lint or raises hair, it's definitely over 1,000 Volts. Rub a balloon on your head, and you generate tens of thousands of volts!"

William J. Beaty

so you see even laying the card on the carpet for a second could have caused damage.

Ok m8 fair enough? just realise that you "may" have damaged your card by placing it on the carpet.

Good luck with the cooler.

Gerry.
