Spore most downloaded game ever because of DRM?

Will the protection get even more absurd?

I read that in response to the stupid DRM EA has paired with Spore, the game has turned out to be the number one pirated game of all time.

So what do y'all think? Will this get EA to get rid of the protection, or elevate it to new ridiculous heights?

wow, that is quite an achievement.. I guess people dont want to pay for games for their kids. Well the economy is bad so maybe that has something to do with it?

I just posted on the Stalker CS thread about this.

http://www.tomsgames.com/us/2008/09/25/sporedrm_lawsuit/

The article states what the DRM does and why EA is being sued.

I can understand their want to make as much money off a game as possible, but installing a piece of software onto someones machine without them knowing, and then creating that software so that I cannot be removed? What kind of crap is that?

:nutkick: <---EA to its customers

I think there will be more DRM's but I hope companies will learn from this lawsuit and let the damn program be removable. There is no stopping games being illegally shared. It's just not gonna happen.

the only solution to pirating is giving away the game for free and making people pay to play it..like MMOs

well it costs a lot more to maintain a MMO than it does an offline game..so the pricing is understood. and, dollar per dollar, mmos are the cheapest form entertainment on the planet. well, other than walking, bike riding, playing with your pets, or kids,..etc that kind of stuff :p

Why dont they use the BF2142 method which it connected you account straight to your serial number, Even now if you download the game, you wouldn't be able to use 100%.

To be honest I can understand why kids pirate - they never seem to have any money these days and what little they do have they spend on wine women and song/ipod :p I don't agree with it but I understand it. But most adults have paid jobs, it's a bit sad that they still pirate really.

Eh, I think they might get the clue because if they force it any further a lot of people are just not going to buy their product... EA deserves it with their half rate work these days anyways.

When will people learn to trust about 10% of what Will Wright is saying? :p

Pirated games are always bad imo. If you don't have the money to buy a game you shouldn't bother. If you can, save up for the games you REALLY want. If you can't save up, get a new hobby because there's a lot mroe to do than play games.

They will keep adding drm until it is perfected, Also why does everyone get so uppity at the idea it doesn't tell you it install's DRM. I mean you bought the game and you don't like the DRM don't accept the license agreement and take it back ... it is that simple anyway most people who complain about the DRM downloaded the game and cry that securom is malware, grow up.

Actually, anything can be removed, you just have to know how. Google program, "the unlocker", it is one of the most amazing small programs ive ever had.

The only way that I can see any changes in DRM is if people do two things.
1) Do not buy the game.
2) Do not download the game.

As it stands right now, the publishers can scream, "See everyone is pirating the game, we need more DRM".
The gamers, of course, just want a game that has reasonable restrictions and not draconian DRM measures.
The rub it that when they d/l a copy to get a non-restrictive game it just adds fuel to the fire of the publishers' rantings about piracy, even if they bought a legitimate copy.

Now consider what would happen if everyone said, "DRM? No thank you. We'll play something else.", and then not purchase or download the game.
Now the publisher's could not complain about piracy, their sales would be in the dumper and they would be left scrambling to keep their IP from being a total loss. Watch how fast the overly restrictive DRM disappears.
That would be more effective than on-line petitions and the like.

However, I put no faith in gamers to have the willpower to not grab a copy of a game off of a torrent after all the waiting and hype.

Just my 2 cents and something to ponder.

You are very right in that... I am all for EA getting ripped off, but that would be the best solution to this problem...

As for DRM being perfect and un crackable it will never happen...

Let me just add something to that, even if the DRM was relaxed chances are you'd never see your favourite game/franchise again. If sales slumped they'd look at it to say "well they obviously don't like this game, let's not make anymore" OR the developers (if they are small-time and are using a publisher like EA) will go bust. So it's a double-edged sword really.

That is possible, but if the gaming community made it abundantly clear that they want the game, just not in the state it is in (ie. lose or relax the DRM) the companies could turn a major setback into decent sales with a quick reaction to the problem. Gamers are willing to forgive and forget if the publishers respond in a positive manner to their requests.

They will continue to be stupid and up the security measures even more. They need to open their eyes, we are quite a defiant generation, so the more they try to force, the harder we push back.

I don't pirate games, but it fucking pisses me off when I have to jump through hoops to get my LEGALLY bought game to work right. Hell, with a splinter cell game that I had, I had to use a no cd on it just to get it to WORK.

Oblivion had no copy protection on it at all, and guess what? They still sold the shit out of the game.
