SATA "2" 3gb/s ports offer ~250MB/s sequential Read and Write speeds. SATA "3" 6gb/s offers up to ~550MB/s on Read and Writes. Actual speeds you will get depend on the drive.

It is recommended that you do a clean install on an SSD instead. Though you can mirror your current installation and migrate it too the new SSD. Pretty much every SSD manufacture has a utility to do that. I know for a fact Samsung does.

All SSDs will be limited to about 260MB/s continuous read/write on SATA2.
SSDs still make your computer real snappy even on SATA2.
Make sure your disk controller is set to AHCI mode in BIOS for best SSD performance.

Hopefully these guides may help you.

Move from a hard drive to an SSD
Move to SSD: migrate your PC to solid state
How to Migrate to a Solid-State Drive Without Reinstalling Windows

You did not mention which OS, so...

Linux: Move your Linux installation to a new Solid State Drive - even a smaller one

Edit: Just my opinion, here: but, I would back up my needed data and go for a fresh install... or, maybe, even an upgrade, if you are using an older version of the OS.
