Hi what size ssd drive would I need to buy to fit windows 7 64 bit, graphics and motherboard drivers.

64GB would be enough, but SSD's getting cheaper these days and if I were you I would buy a larger one so you can install some games on it as well.

I installed W7 Ultimate and 8mb of apps (BOINC, HWMon and cpuz) onto a 120gb ssd yesterday.

out of the 111gb available i now have 74.7gb free.

If i now install Steam and GTA V the disc will be pretty much full, basically one o/s and one huge game on a drive of 120gb.

Just out of interest, i ran Cinebench before and after installing the ssd, the score was exactly the same

My Steam Streamer is running a 60GB SSD, but for all future builds I would advise everyone to run 120GB drives for their OS and software. 60GB cuts it fine in some circumstances. 120GB's are pretty dam cheap these days. Makes sense to install your OS and ALL your software (exlcuding games) to the SSD to take the most advantage of the performance. If you have room left over for games, quids in.

depending on how much "junk" u want to store with ur OS everything from 60~250gb is fine, but for normal users i will properly go 120gb then u got lidt for installing programs and a game or two.

i use 120GB SSD's for all 4 of my pc's. wouldnt go any smaller than that. My next build will prolly have a 250GB SSD for OS though

People say to steer clear of Kinston SSD NOWs, but for the price they are very capable drives

prices for Kingston's SSD NOW are good, but i wouldn't use them personally had to many problems with them also ppl that had purchased the HyperX SSD's firmware lockups, dying SSD's personally i go Intel or Samsung.

850 EVO, MX100/BX100, and the OCZ ARC 100 are all ideal drives for consumers on a budget. I personally would not go for anything below the cost of any of those four SSD's, as its liable to be complete trash. Above the cost of those however, is perfectly reasonable!

I've got a single 64GB Intel 520 as an OS/Programs drive, and 6TB of HDD's for everything else. The SSD has ~20GB free (kept for headroom).

A few spare Barracuda's make a 2TB RAID 0 Games partition, holds 520GB, 2x USB3 externals for Movies, Music. The rest; Uninstalled apps, VMware, MyDocs, Backups, etc are all split between the 5 other drives...

At the time I bought my SSD they were still very expensive, 64GB was what I needed. As mentioned above 120GB are cheap as chips these days, so up to you really.....

I recommend at least a 256GB SSD - more room for future apps.

Dont forget if you have a tendency to drop stuff onto your desktop - all the crap you drop there uses the space your hard drive is installed on hence the 256GB recommendation.

I have went from using 90, 128 to 256GB SSDs as OS drives. windows updates alone for win7 will most likely bring your installation close to 60 or 70GB if not more, Windows Office updates take up around 2GB too so factor windows office+updates into the equation. throw in a few more general use apps such as CD burning or media creating software, photo/paintshop, smaller apps like a AV/firewall, VLC, skype winamp - whatever small apps you run on a regular basis and you will slowly find your space being all used up.

With my 256GB SSD - i have 100GB free and thats with some crap left on my desktop. I honestly wouldnt have it any other way.

The Kingston SSDNow V300 are - at least here - very common and among the cheaper drives but they are to be avoided.

EDIT: I can clarify: They switched the NAND circuits and performance dropped by up to 60% and the made no distinctions between the old drive and the new drive.

A few months ago I went to buy some Kingston SSD for Crunching but the guy that works at the pc shop and i know suggested me not to buy it, if they sell 10 units 3 or 4 get returned to be replaced.

I say 256Gb minimum as your boot drive to support the OS, all your programs, and your data files. While 60Gb will hold W7, it does not leave a lot of room for the windows managed Page File, temp files and update files which will start eating space. 120Gb may not hold the OS plus all your program files if you have large programs like MS Office and such.

Note the SSD is ideal for page files. Even if you have gobs of RAM, I would urge all to just let Windows manage the PF and give it lots of room by putting it on a 256Gb SSD. The days of user managed PFs is long gone (along with XP).

Some say to put your program files on a secondary hard disk. I did that with my last computer and was happy with it - until I built this system for W8 and put everything on the SSD. Now I wonder how I put up with it before.

I have a 56 page Word document full of canned texts and links I use for "working" the forums. I put a link to that doc on my Quicklaunch taskbar. And without exaggerating, when I click the link, that 56 page document "pops" open in less than 1 second. I mean it still amazes me how fast a SSD is.

I also have a large spinner disk as a secondary (D and E) drive that I use to mass storage of my 600 music CD and for backups of my SSD but my next computer I will be building soon for W10 with have all SSDs.

Mate are you kidding? A full W7 installation with all updates needs about 15GB.... Even with hibernation and an 8GB page file you're still only looking at 25GB....?
