I'd love this to be amazing but somehow i can see it being utterly rubbish for some reason.

Star Trek game have ALWAYS been crap tbh ,and with the problems this has had im not hopefull of it being that good, but i'd love to be proven wrong ,if it was very good and got rave reviews id buy it in a flash :)

no there are exceptions to the rule

Star Fleet Command 1 and 2

    Star Trek Armada 2

    Star Trek Elite Force

    Star Trek Elite Force 2

    Star Trek Bridge Commander

so there is your good, though borg was a great RPG sadly you need windows 95 to run it

If you haven't seen the webcast, you missed something. The game sounds really interesting, it has elements from eve like building ships together as a "fleet" (=guild). It might be a huge single cluster instead of server shards, apparently their tech allows it. Both space and ground battles are included. Crew are NPC's that gain skills and the likes. You get bonusses from your crew, ie their race. I would imagine having A Klingon crew gets you quite a bonus when fighting on your ship for instance.
I'm pretty sure you can look at the webcast later and see for yourself.

Can you shoot at planets and hurt the players on them?
(This is a retarded question, but if games ever got that cool, I'd shit myself.)

At some points in the trailer they look quite nice, though I think the "cartoonish" looks do have a negative effect on graphics in many parts. On the other hand, games like these aren't about graphics. It has a lot of potential due to the deep background and endless amount of content that already exists.

which might be a problem because getting everything to be in line with the star trek lore seems to be a huge task

It seems to take place well after the "new generation" so it would make it easier for them to adjust the lore accordingly. I found this link More Trek MMO news.

I would love to play this but I cant bring myself to pay monthly for a game. :shadedshu

As said in the webcast, all the team members of Cryptic have tasks to watch Star Trek series, read the books, etc. They seem confident that they're geeky enough to pull it off.

And even if there are slight inconsistencies, only the worst of geeks would notice/care.

They talked about making it as easy to play as WoW (as far as system specs) so that might be why it dosen't look "amazing". I don't really care about the graphics as long as I get to play with my friends as a manly-ass Klingon crew. They're gonna be the Horde of this game, I know it.
