I thought this might be of interest to people heavily invested in steam.

You have to sign up to the group and wait for an invite e-mail to the beta program before you can start. I think i'm probably number 60,000 in the queue, so I won't be joining any time soon unless anyone here has spare invites.

I don't understand the badge/achievement obsession. This just makes me think of that.

I personally like it because of the feeling of achievement, and something to work for in the game.

Shouldn't a game be designed to be rewarding without needing external attachments.

consider this, for a sandbox game with no instructions (minecraft), the achievements can guide the player or even make them aware that a certain feature/location/enemy/weapon exists

the worst achievements are 'collect 10, 100, 1,000 items', those would be plain stats (which some people like anyway, but dont belong as achievements)

as for this steam thing, even if you're not into achievements or they dont entice you to play, you will start playing to 'earn' things (like they did that one holiday sale, i earned lots of dlcs & full games instead of buying)

What does achievements in games have to do with Steam putting this in to give away games?

either way, lets put it this way, some games you can play and set a goal, lets say BF3, you want a specific weapon, or a KDR, or some other stat. Multiplayer games (FPS/MMO) are pretty easy to set goals in, it's a game of a competitive nature. But single player games, not somuch, you always got the default goal of beating the game, but what else? Explore everything? If you look at many of these achievements in games (especially SP), lots are discovering certain types of easter eggs that you might have never even known existed. Or doing things in a way that is out of the ordinary, but then you realize that way has some sort of reference to pop culture.

Putting these things in gets people to not just play the game to beat it, but to explore the world, and try weird things. Or at the very least, push their ability.

I beat both GoW I and II and did Challenge of the Gods/Challenge of the Titans. I did this on PS3 and got the Trophies for it all. And that was some of the most challenging gameplay I have ever come across, but when I beat it (despite the trophy), I felt a great sense of accomplishment, and I probably would have never even tried those challenges out if the trophy had not existed.

I activated the opt-in for steam betas to be able to take part in this, but so far, nothing. :\
Uhh...no. Free customization items for your stuff, like the profile page...or coupons.
Cool, may I have one, please?
    Thank you! :)
